MT Vs. CVT
The original clutch in my 1986 Porsche 944 lasted 20 years, 235K miles! I autocrossed and tracked the car, but I never "peeled out" or dragged it (not much point dragging a car with 150 HP, anyway). Granted, I never had to commute in stop -and-go traffic.
Anyway when your driving stick you have more control over the car. You feel more like a pilot. If you let go of the clutch too quick or too slow it will make a difference. I like challenging myself to make perfect shifts and downshifts. Driving the CVT I'd only press on the gas and turn the wheel. That's no fun to me.
as far as the argument goes with MT vs CTV
i’ve owned a full auto truck…a CTV mini…and two stick cars (in that order)
and i must say, i won’t go back to auto…i can’t…manual transmissions are just too enjoyable.
i think the main reason a lot of people bash manual saying it’s annoying, bad in traffic, and so on, is mostly because they have only tired it once and got frustrated…or they haven’t tried it at all. (i was the same at one point)
talking strictly about CTV now…yes, they are better than a traditional automatic transmission…but i find you get bored of them easily…

No contest for me. 5-speed all the way
1. 91' Accord (auto) my first car. hand-me-down from my parents.
2. 01' Prelude (5 speed)
3. 02' Eclipse GT Spyder (5 speed)
4. 08' Lancer GTS (5 speed)
5. whatever it'll be, it'll be stick

Are you sure about those numbers???
2750 RPM at 60 MPH
3000 RPM at 65 MPH
Both of those numbers seem pretty reasonable to me. Not that I wouldn't mind having a sixth gear.
Actually, I think a good solution for the Lancer would be to simply have somewhat taller 4th and 5th gears. In my opinion, both are too short. Granted, that gives more torque in those gears, but if I'm doing 65 and need more torque, I could always drop down to third.
Hey, sorry to bring back an old thread, but i was reading through an article on howstuffworks.com and came across this statement.
"In theory, a car with a CVT should reach 60 mph (100 km/hr) 25-percent faster than the same car with the same engine and a manual transmission [ref]. That's because the CVT converts every point on the engine's operating curve to a corresponding point on its own operating curve." - source
But keep in mind that says in theory, in real world test, it seems everyone is faster with manual. Maybe theres a way we can reprogram the cvt ecu to be faster instead of for economical? Of course it has a greater chance of breaking tho.
