Angry Problem with my moonroof

I was on my home tonight and wanted to open my moonroof, and the damn thing wouldn't open. When I got a chance to look at it, it was jamming against the top of the car, almost like it was too tight of a fit where the rubber gasket on the glass is up against the roof of the car... I'm pissed right now! To get it to open properly, I had to push down on the glass so it would drop down and slide back normally... WTF!

Any suggestions, help or experience etc. with this would be greatly appreciated, thanx.

BTW... my car is only 81/2 months old, and I've never had a problem before tonight with the moonroof.

I don't get it, my moonroof started working fine yesterday and today also. Wierd, guess I'll have to keep an eye on it, make sure it doesn't start acting up again.

My suggestion is... next time you run into that problem, leave it that way and bring it to your dealer. Maybe the warranty can come in handy

I'm bringing this thread back instead of making a new one.

I'm having the same issue as the OP, mine seems to be related to the temperature. When its cooler out like 50's 60's my moonroof jams up. But when I'm in Phoenix and its 120 outside it works perfectly. (ironically when I don't want to use it)

I know this thread is from 03 so hopefully someone else has figured out what to do about this by now! I have an extended warranty but I don't want to pay my $100 deductible for something they could just say they fixed.
Thanks for the help!

its the rubber gasket! My audi did that to me one day and its annoying. So i just cut part of the rubber off and now it works like a charm. Thing is, is that the rubber gets messed up over a period of time when we use the sunroof a lot. Mine kept getting stuck while opening than it got stuck all the way once and i couldn't shut it :[. Take it too the dealership and tell them they need to replace the rubber piece and it should fix it.

The cause is indeed the rubber seal on the glass. DO NOT CUT THE RUBBER in any way. Get a can of silicon lubricant, spray some on on a rag, open your sunroof to vent so the glass is above the roof and wipe down the seal. This will condition the seal to work better. I condition my door, trunk and sunroof seals every summer. Rubber dries out and deteriorates over time. Using the spray will keep it conditioned longer.

Great! Thanks guys! I will try the silicon lubricant tomorrow! I will do every seal as well like you said you do senate, that makes sense to me as I have always wondered how to keep the seals from getting so dried that they become dry and flake off. Arizona summers are hard on rubber ...

If all else fails I will take it to Mitsu and tell them the gasket on the sunroof is causing it to stick and to replace it.

I had this happen to mine within the first 6 months of ownership, then it got worse where I could only open it halfway, then it wwould get stuck open, then it would only vent instead of opening up, etc. I had to take it to the dealership 3 times to fix, the final time they had to put locktight on the fasteners, and crank it down...it hasn't happened since, but now sits about 1/4" lower than the roof profile...

The Toyota dealership did something similar to my mom's Camry. Hopefully I can fix my problem with out resorting to that, since the drop bothers me a bit.

^^^ yeah, it gets on my nerves, too. Then again, I'd rather have the piece of mind knowing that it won't get stuck open when I'm on a 1200 mile roadtrip. yeah, that happened. The last 600 miles home I was praying to the mitsu gods not to crap down rain upon me:-p

^ haha yeah I just drove this past weekend from PHX to Cali and back 800 miles round trip, to the beach. Thats when my moonroof stared acting up again. I was just happy it was stuck closed not open haha, but not because of rain but how hot it is on the drive back to AZ is, its about 120 degrees in the middle of nowhere haha...
