Light on the Trip Odometer

For a while now, the light on the trip odometer s not working at night. The rest of lights are working (headlights, dome light, other interior lights). Is this a bulb issue or a fuse problem? If it is a bulb issue, is it hard to fix? Do I need to take the dash apart or how should I go about it? This is for a 2002 Lancer ES.

Thanks in advance.

i dont have a lancer but this is a very common problem for our clusters.

its the bulb.

it is a very easy fix.

there are two screws on the top of the black plastic piece that goes around the cluster

see the image for the two screws if you are not familiar with them

(#2, screw b) x2 ((there philips))

now pull that straight out.

you will now see 3 more philips screws holding the cluster to the dash.

2 on top 1 on bottom.

unscrew them and the cluster will have some slack (finangle) it forward by primarily tilting the bottom forward. reach your hand behind and there are two clumps of wires (unclip each clump) and pull the entire cluster forward and out.

on the back of the cluster there are 4 or 5 small philips screws holding a brown plate to cluster.

unscrew them take the brown thing out.

now you will see the small black bulbs, locate the one that is burned out and replace it.

any dealer will have the correct part # and there twist lock style

This is happening to mine too...
i just had a new head unit put in so I don't know if wires got touched or pulled.
Did you do anything to your car when you noticed the problem or did it just happen randomly?

Wow, I didn't figure it'd be that easy to get the instrument cluster out/in. Thanks for the detailed info.
