Relatively Subarus have a tendency to gain more power and torque when adding a downpipe when compare to the Evo. Let me explain, the 03 to 05 WRXand STI came with 2 catalytic converters on the Downpipe, the Evo has none on the downpipe, instead the Evo has a single cat after the Downpipe, in my opinion it is well back to be affected by spool up and velocity of gases.

As you know very well, the Subarus extract very significant amount of power and torque from the downpipe due to the elimination of two consecutives cats located inches from the turbo.

Additionally there is no longer a third cat (up-pipe) on the 06' and up Subarus. This would logically explain why the downpipes make the Subarus gain significantly in performance. Basicly what I am saying is that a 07 Subaru model will pick up huge tq and power from a Downpipe alone.

Great post. Also, keep in mind that the disadvantage of going with an uncatted downpipe on the 04s and 05s will definitely heighten the chances of boost spike to the point of boost cut-off. It's simply too much with the stock turbo. Under most circumstances, the best option is to go with a catted downpipe on the STi. To "piggyback" on your comment, (), instead of having 2 cats in the downpipe with an aftermarket one, you would have a single high-flow cat in its place. Unless plans include upgrading the turbo or modifying the wastegate, a catted downpipe is definitely the way to go.

I might be switching teams in a few years, myself. It depends on what the next generation of the two bring to the table. It surely wouldn't hurt my feelings to own another STi/STI.

Wow, hope they also redesigned the motor mounts! And that top mount intercooler gets heat soaked after 3 pulls on the dyno. They must have used some ice on that turd.
I read an article in Turbo and High Tech Performance, the October issue with the HKS evo on the cover...
They did a Stock IC temp test on a dyno. Runs were conducted in 4th gear with 30 second intervals between each run.
Run 1 139.9 F in 110.6 F out
Run 2 187.9 F in 140.1 F out
Run 3 211.2 F in 197.6 F out
Run 4 245.1 F in 244.4 F out

By the 4th dyno pull, the I.C. is completely ineffective.

BS. I dynoed 2 weeks ago and my strongest pull was on my 3rd run. If you're referring to a highly modified car, then it may be a different story.

I still love my Aspen White 06

who cares about numbers? I never do.
I have beaten quite a few modded Evo and STI at the track (course & autox) no gay drag racing. When you comparing these two cars, its more about the driver than the car itself.

Evo steering response is awsome tho, hands down on that.

+1 on all accounts. I find dragracing far from "gay," but I think anybody that bought either an STi or an Evo to dragrace is an idiot.

I've driven both, the Evo and the STi/STI, and there's nothing I'd try (or have tried) in the Evo that I wouldn't try in an STi/STI.

You mean to tell me that you didn't know that? I mean, after all, it must be easy to control an 8000 hp funnycar!

well ive owned both cars, Evo MR and a STi. and again i just got another 2007 STI.

I definately see a difference from my 04 STI to my 07. I raced my buddies bone stock IX MR with my 2007 STI stock. and he beat me from a 30mph roll by about 1-1.5 cars to 120. we did this 3 times to make sure and it was the same result each time. with just my invidia race cat back on my sti, we raced again 3 times. and in 4th gear i walked away from him... surprisingly hard.... i ended up gaining 2.5+ cars on him to 130... so i cant wait to see when everything goes on my car. my other good friend has a IX GSR with turboback, reflash and boost controller. I ran a 12.4 @114 on race gas with it and 12.5 @112 on 93. im going to run him next week once i get my downpipe and FMIC on.

So, why'd you go back an STI?

The gear ratios were supposedly revised on the new STI to allow for a 4th gear quarter mile. That should help tremendously.

I'd like to see drag strip runs to back up the dyno numbers. It would be cool if they were confirmed.

I had an 04 STI. Now I have a Evo IX. The car is ok. It honestly has never felt as good to drive as my STI. My evo is modded. Ive got all the bolt ons and Meth. Its quick but my synchros are going. They have been SH$t since the first day i got it. My gears grind from 2-3 shifts. My clutch is gone too but that is expected at 400hp. My brakes felt better in the STI too which is strange since they both have Brembos?? Either way I guess it comes down to personal preference. I think im gonna sell the evo and get another STI. It sucks for me since my Evo has a whopping 7k on it....LOL

You'll find that the later STis/STIs are much improved over the 2004 model. Even the 2005 model feels significantly better.

Your crunching gears with only 7k miles? I knew that was a problem with 2003s but not any other years. Im at 66k on my 05 and even with the ridiculous abuse I put on it, still shifts great. Sorry to hear your car sucks
