400-500hp dd evo or sti?
i think i might just wing it with a 400+hp used sti, after all i do live in the country and i got a lot of fun dirt roads, especially in the winter, maybe when i get enough money, get both of them, i sure dont want to leave this forum, ive grew into this place, i like the people on here, so i cant get away from the evos completely
Right now I'm not just looking around getting a idea what's out there, not settling on a car yet but when you do buy one what do you look for? Reviews on the tuner/ builder haha
.
Damn, I'm surprised this guy isn't getting flamed by now or something.
Generally, that's what happens on the other forums I'm on. Lol
As it's been said, we can't decide for you dude. Drive both.
I don't have an Evo yet..but what's won me over is:
-This forum. The people here have definitely proven to me that the Evo is the better choice when it comes to modding, and racing down the highway with my stupid friends.
-Sat in my friend's 400-500whp (somewhere in there..lol) '04 STi and loved it, the speed and power is a lot of fun. But he spent so much money to get that far..it's insane.
-The looks. An Evo looks so much more aggressive from all angles.
What makes me disappointed:
-Girls seem to enjoy Subi's more. Well, there aren't more than like 5 Evos in my entire state so maybe they just aren't used to them. lol
....and that's about it.
The Evo community seems nice as well. On here anyway.
There's a few Subi owners I know that are straight up douchebags.

.As for the girls thing, it's the same here in Oregon. I see a lot of girl Subaru drivers. But I've also seen a couple of girl EVO drivers at the track and I instantly fell in love.
If you are going to get a used STI then a compression and leak down test are a must. The STIs are notorious for cracking piston ringlands. 400whp is "safe" on a stock block STI but it greatly depends on the tune and how aggressive it is. STI motors can't handle knock for very long before they are done. I would highly suggest you join this forum if you haven't already:

I dont mean to come off as rude OP, but if you know nothing of the car, I wouldn't suggest spending 20K+ on a car thats fully built, because the second something breaks you're going to be scratching your head going "WTF did I get myself into"
You'll learn to appreciate your car much more if you build it yourself. That way you know everything that was done, and how it was done.
For me I didnt know too much about evo's but I trolled this forum long enough before I bought mine... Of which had a friendly list of bolt ons(That I'm slowly changing to different ones) I do however work with people who live and breath STI's/Evo's so its much easier on me ha.
Just think twice before buying a fully built car! Just my .02
Otherwise, I cant lie, STI's are music to my ears cruising.... but I still love my evo more

go ahead, i dare you to buy an sti
i see you want to drift it?
then maybe you should get a subie, but when you get smoked by the first evo you see and you look over at your girl and she has that blank stare, you'll be back here talking about the evo your know looking to buy.
do your own research and make your own decision, and when your done then go by an evo
but as you can see i'm bias, i'm on my second one and thousands of dollars later, and you wont be able to pry the keyes from my cold dead hands
imo 400-450 is the perfect power level for a RELIABLE daily driven evo, and you have a 10sec car. and you'll keep your chick

An STI that makes 500whp is a wallet busting proposition. Their engines need complete reworking to sustain that kind of performance. They have miles of pre-turbo piping and spool lag on every upshift.
Make sure you have multiple ratchets and crazy extensions in the car at all times for when you blow off an inaccessable IC pipe from switching to a front mount intercooler.
Or forego the Sub-par-u heartache and get an Evo. Better car, better handling out of the box, infinitely better engine, and better resale. Did I say better car yet?

No
They need their engines to be reworked to handle the stock turbo...
Like it's been mentioned. If you want a nicer interior and creature comforts the STI is where it's at. If you want speed and reliability on a smaller buck, Evo all day.

I would highly recommend that you drive both, however i personally drove 2 stis before I drove an evo IX, and I knew very quickly that I couldn't settle for the stis.
Evos resale better than stis, but as you're just looking at getting one, this prolly won't matter to you for a while.
Stis have a much more reliable 6 spd tran, but the 5 spd evo trannies are plenty reliable and you'll have better times on a 5spd anyway
Evos 4g63 is SOOOOOOOO much easier to work on, its a time proven platform that mitsus been using in dsms for decades, also because of this its much easier to get parts for it since its interchangeable and fits 4g64 stuff as well, although the one in the evo is flipped from the dsm models.
Styling is personal opinion, I personally would only even consider the 06-07 sti, i don't like the "bug eyes", "pig eyes", or the brand new gen of stis. I've always loved the styling on the evo, i prefer the 9s looks to the 8, but i like them both a lot better, but thats all opinion.
I dunno about the girl thing, I've seen a lot more females driving stis/wrxs, I've only seen 2 chicks in evos. But every girl I've been around in my evo, is generally plenty impressed with it, especially when I get up to about 2800rpm
stis feels a little better on the lowend, (2.5>2.0) evo feels significantly better when it starts boosting, also evos handle noticably better (that's what won it for me). After driving stis the evo I drove had such amazing handling (not that stis are bad, just not the same).
stis exhaust rumble is pretty sexy, evo with cams though sounds ****ing mean
, and if you're looking at 500sh horsepower, you're gonna be camming it pretty quick.
