Congrats to Mark and John! Great Job!

John, what kind of tires were you running? The results say Yokohama.

John was on Hoosier A3SO5's. His car is just about perfect on balance. I think he would have run even quicker than I did on Sunday if he didn't have to go conservative on his last run to cover the overall event. Both John and I just had a bad driving day on Sunday. LOL

I don't mean to be negative but the courses in Toledo were absolutely TERRIBLE.....

The surface is really weird too. In some spots there is OK grip. Mostly I was wicked, WICKED loose and just couldn't motor through some sections.

Peru will be the best test. There is only so much you can do with the site. WHICH IS GOOD IMO. It forces the course designer to build either such a terrible course that NOBODY will stand for it or actually BUILD a course. In Peru there will be more grip, more, or A slalom, more on, and off camber sections, more bumps, and more grip. Did I say more grip already?

Anyhow good job to all the rally car drivers, and I'll see Y'all in Oscoda.

BTW Stompy's seat could be an even lighter seat and still be legal. I'm considering a Kart seat. Ala some of the CSP Miata's and CRX's.

It would be great if you guys would post some pics of your cars. We would be really interested in seeing what you guys are doing for car setup from a visual perspective. Suspension shots, engine shots. That is if you do not want to give away too many secrets!

I am dying to see Eric's monster. Champ car brakes, turbo change, etc.

By the way Eric, are you using the champ car brakes so that you can run smaller rims? Is you idea to lower the car with the smaller wheels shortening the gears like the Miata guys do or are you going for just raw stopping power?

If someone will host some pictures I can get some together in the next week or so. I'm not sure when all the parts will be on the car - for September for sure... I've been working on the drivetrain and brake upgrades and they should be finished for the Oscoda Pro. I'm going to test a couple things in Joliet tomorrow.

I'm trying the champcar calipers because I would like to have a light, efficient braking setup. Plus I got a good deal on parts.... The front caliper/rotor upgrade cost me less than a typical front brake kit and weighs less.

Here's my car at our local June 12 event. Visually, not too much different than stock. Lowered a bit, front bumper lip removed, and 285/30R18 Hoosiers on 18x10 CCW wheels.

And in the spirit of the "update" in the thread title, this event had a very competitive field in SM. In fact, although I ended up winning, my winning run was only the fifth fastest run in SM, the faster runs all having cone penalties. I PAXed 13th out of 230 entrants. Perhaps the best spin I can put on the event is that I was one of only two entrants with three raw times under 56 seconds -- the other being the lone F125 kart competitor. Results are here: http://solo.wdcr-scca.org/results/20050612.php

I ran my Hoosier A3S04s at around 47F/45R. Dampers are 1 click from full stiff in the front, 3 clicks from full stiff in the rear. Spring rates are 550 lbs all around. Camber is around -3.5* front, -2.5* rear, zero toe all around.

jbrennen,
Why did you remove the front lip? Is it just for lowering the weight?

How were the tires on heat btw? Are you glad you ended up with the A compounds? What are your plans with the car now?

The rear tires don't get much heat at all. The front tires heated up decently, but it took two full runs to get there. But the car still has a lot of grip. That picture above is from the first left hander of the course, probably about 4 to 5 seconds into a run. So the right hand tires there are probably fairly cold by most standards, but still have enough grip to almost lift the entire left hand side of the car.

I've only done two events on the 285s, and for those events, the autocross compound was definitely the way to go. Without a codriver, I'd never be able to heat up road race compound tires.

Plans for the car... Honestly, I don't really know. Ask me again in about 2 months, after I've moved. I see there's an autocross scheduled on July 17th in San Diego, the day before I start my new job; I'd love to have the Evo out there and ready to go by then.

Laziness more than anything. I took it off a while back when I was working on the car, planning to touch up the paint and reinstall it, but that never happened, so the lip sits in my garage.

Ok, just got back from the SCCA Ft. Devins National tour. It was a good and bad weekend. The short version is that the changes made to rear bushings, and alignment finally fixed the loose condition that I have been fighting. Officially I ended up winning sm by 1.8 seconds, that is the good news. The bad news is that I really had a rough time driving. Not one of my better weekends. I also have come to the conclusion that I need a longer 2nd gear. 64 mph in second just isn't gonna cut it. rowing between 2nd and 3rd 3 times per run is not the quick way around an autocross course. On Saturdays runs, I was under the car for the first two, and came real close to putting it off into the grass on my third run( which was my fastest). Sunday didn't go much better as I managed to cone my first two runs, and had to make a real conservative third run just to get a clean reasonable time. The car is now very good handling wise, now it is time to make the big power, and change gearing. ( Also need to beat the driver about the head and shoulders to drive the dang thing better. )
The next step is to get the TME titanium turbo, and extrude honed exhaust maifold and o2 housing on the car. Then the car will be getting Vishnu's new active tuning SMART setup, hoping to produce enough low end power and earlier spool to more than offset the gears that are going in that will allow me to run 75mph in second gear. So the next major event is the Toledo pro solo in early august with the car hopefully in its final configuration before the SCCA solo Nationals in Topeka, KS. in Sept. The Pro solo in Toledo should be a really good test as one of the top supercharged M3's driven by Bob Tunnel will be there providing a really good benchmark of just how good the evo is. stay tuned.
