Now it seems that's not a problem for guys like Stemler (so much power that 3rd gear is probably the appropriate gear anyway) or Daddio (who is already talking about changing gear ratios).

How high can you safely rev the engine with the AMS 2.3 stroker? Can you go much past 7000 RPM? With stock internals, 8000 RPM is no problem.
With proper internal parts 8000 rpm isn't a problem for a stroker at least for short durations.

FYI, if people are looking for autox tires I have sets of used 275/35-18 A3S04's, 285/30-18 S04's, and 285/30-18 Kumho V700's. I also have a variety of 2.25" springs available. PM me if interested.

I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, but AMS advertises that their stroker kit is safe to 8000 rpms. They go on to say that for drag racing purposes, they feel confident that the motor can rev as high as 8500 in fourth gear for going through the traps. I had Shiv set my rev limit at 8000. (knowing him, he really set it at 7940 or some such number to be safer...)

So, I should have a big safe power band: 3850 to 8000, or 4150 total. I'm not claiming it is an ideal autoX motor/turbo, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Well this weekend should tell the tale of just how competitive the sm evo will be come nationals time. Finally I will get a crack at one of the west coast BMW m3's. Bob Tunnell will be at the SCCA Toledo Pro Solo, and should provide a much needed benchmark for just where I am at. I finally got my active tuning for timing(Vishnu xede) up and running today, and it seems to work well. I also have a conservative race gas tune in the car and this will be the first major event for those two. Will post up results when I get back.

Eric, will you have your evo out for this weekends event to help me uphold the evo contingent in sm?

Mark,

Looking forward to watching you at Nationals. I will be there in STU. I was just reading the SCCA magazine in the "Who will win" article. I think they gave the win to Tunnell. I hope you or Eric prove them wrong.

Silencer (Dave) -

Where are you from in Michigan? Do you run the DRSCCA or SVR AX races?

I know John and Andy. I have definitely learned alot over the past year by watching both of them and picking their brains. I am getting ready to step up to the A3S04. I have the tire but I have to wait for 5Zigen to get some more wheels in stock for me. So far this year I have just been running the Azenis RT-615. Andy (from Showcase) drove my car at an event and said they were about the best street tires he had experienced. I've done OK in SM in the regional events, only lost once - to a Honda in the rain! I was totally shocked!

Anyway, I am looking forward to running the whole CenDiv series and as many ProSolos as I can get to next year, as well as Nationals. Can't wait to go up against some great national level competition to see how far off the pace I am. I've only been running AX for a year now, since I bought the EVO from Andy's dealershp and he talked me into coming to a race. I am absolutely hooked!

A quick question for all of you big tire users.

I know the 5Zigen FN01R-C in 18x9.5 is very popular. Does anyone run an 18x10 from another manufacturer all around?

Thanks,

CCW will make custom 18x10s for the Evo. Stemler/Tipple and Harrison/Kahangi both ran 18x10 CCWs last year, and I've been running them this year. The 18x10 CCW is also popular with the M3 autoXers -- Bob Tunnell and Lee Piccione have both run 18x10 CCWs on their cars.

The Harrison/Kahangi Evo is in the Gallery that you'll find there. More info here: http://www.joe250.com/cars/evo/steamroller.htm

Whats the max backspacing that will work on the Evos (running coilovers or
oem struts)?
I found that using offset is useless when trying to figure out fitments.

It's probably 50/50 whether I bring my car.... at Oscoda I broke an axle, hub, and suspension upright.... I should have stronger hubs that fit today (finally) but the car hasn't run for nearly 6 weeks so my season is effectively over with this car.

The article comes out annually in SportsCar SCCA magazine, the publication that all SCCA members get for free. It is speculation on winners at the National Solo Championships.

Eric,

Sorry to hear that. I am kind of surprised as the drag race guys don't seem to have too many failures like that. Did it brake on a launch? I would think that Toledo will be much easier on drive train as the grip is not nearly as good as Oscoda. See you there.

Yeah it broke off the line. I think the axle initially cracked after the 2nd full throttle launch. I do have a little horsepower and shorter gearing so I have quite a bit of torque at the axle in 1st. Even if I get the car together it's pretty fun to run Tipple's Honda - the corner speeds are unbelievable.

jbrennan - Thanks for the info on CCW. Unfortunately they are a bit out of my price range. Nearly double what I can get the FN01R-C for. I guess I will have to wait for them to come in.

Eric - Those Honda's sure do look fun! I've seen Tipple's car run quite a bit. Watching it from the distance it looks almost like you can drive it full throttle around the whole track.

And on the axle breaking issue, a few of the drag racers are starting to use aftermarket stronger axles because of breaking so many stockers. I know "Big Al" from Dynoflash does. Plus, Eric's tires are probably stickier than any that drag racers use, his wheel/tire package is probably heavier than a full-drag setup, and some draggers use taller gearing so they don't have to shift as much. All this adds up to more stress on the axles.

I've not driven against Tipple's car, but I've driven against Chris Travis' Civic (with an ITR motor) -- the highest placing FWD SM car at Nationals the last two years. Last time we faced each other ('04 NEDiv), he slaughtered me on Saturday on a very technical course, then I edged him on Sunday on a "hold-on-and-pray" type of course. I did have a bit of an advantage on Sunday -- I ended the day on Saturday out of the trophies, while Chris was in the lead. Which means that I was able to drive on Sunday like I had nothing to lose, which paid off as I set the 2nd fastest time of the day for a DOT tire class (behind course designer Lee Piccione's BSP M3).

And yeah, I think that the SM Civics spend a lot more time at full throttle than the SM Evos.
