2009 Formula 1 Discussion
Not too sure what to think right now but I have this strong feeling that SF is going to strike back with puuuuuuuure thunder real soon. Kimi's running a revised car but I'm not too sure if he can utilize it the way Massa would. There is nothing I would like to see more than a 6+ car battle for top podium honors. Some one has to stop Button. It'll surely be tough now that Braun is updating both cars. As i've said before every race this year, this weekend will be FUN!!!
I don't agree at all. As Sir Williams said, capping costs and allowing more technical freedom is much closer to the spirit of F1 than what has been happening over the past few years, where essentially the teams with the biggest budgets have been in front. By capping the budget, teams will have to work smarter and can't simply hire an extra two dozen aero guys to try to squeeze every last 100th of a second out of the car.
Again, F1 has always been a sport where engineers, teams and drivers come together to have the best overall package. By having such a tight budget engineers are limited in what they can do which in turn slows development drastically.
Anyone one who thinks that the "richest" teams are the only ones who win things in F1 don't pay much attention. Do you think McLaren & Ferrari are the big spenders in F1? Honda (Brawn), Toyota and Redbull have for years been dumping twice as much cash into their F1 programs. Only this year have they seen fruits of their labor and the sole reasons was because of drastic changes to the rules and a much longer development schedule that either Ferrari or McLaren. Plus Ross Brawn is a hell of a smart guy which took them from the back row to the front row.
You think this cap will help the likes or Redbull, Toyota and Honda when they can't shell out the wads of cash they have been for years?

I completely agree! There shouldn't be a cap on technological innovation but there needs to be a spending cap. That way, things tend to sort their way out ...
Yea but development costs money, you don't develop for free. Infact developement is the most expensive part. I believe last year they said that Ferrari and McLaren spent the most amount of money to make the car that 1 - 1.5 sec faster per lap by the end of the season. And the development cost for that was in the millions (over US $10mil I think, sorry can't remember). Anyways that point is it was rediculous amounts of money that no other teams could afford to spend.

I am very well aware of what F1 spending is like. And yes McLaren and Ferrari did spend the most money on last year's car. Because of it they won both championships. So does that mean Redbull, Honda and Toyota weren't spending money? They were in fact spending all of it on this year's cars, tons of it as they always have. What do the standings look like again? You can find those spending numbers easily on the web as I have. Also when viewing those numbers take into account that drivers, directors and team members get paid more at Ferrari and McLaren than at the other teams, that means that the other teams have even more money to spend on development than they already do.
When you are a developing team behind the 8 ball you don't spend less to catch up to the leaders, on the contrary you have to spend that much more. The teams that have leapfrogged the big two knew it and acted as they should have.
You have to remember Ferrari and McLaren are very small companies. Yes they have the backing of FIAT and Mercedes respectively but they will never be the financial juggernauts that Toyota and Honda are or Redbull is as a brand. The one thing they have that do have over the likes of the rest are more experienced and longer established teams. The others have paid big money for the likes of Brawn and Adrian Newie to make a difference (which they have massively).
I just wonder what will happen to Brawn once they can no longer depend on Honda's cash, Ross is good, but not that good. They better start going after sponsors NASCAR style, LOL. "The Jackhawk 9000... available at Walmart" - Ricky Bobby.

Max Mosely should give up and go into the S&M **** business and Bernie... well Bernie can stop pretending he isn't old as f*** and just retire to some place where nobody knows him.
I am beginning to understand Kimi's comments about things that don't concern racing affecting his love for the sport.

You are contradicting yourself there. In your first reply you say there shouldn't be a cap on technological innovation and there should be a spending cap. Then in your second reply you go on to say development costs money and development isn't free.

So instead of making the part out of "unobtainium", they'll have to make it out of cheaper materials which actually helps filter down to production vehicles that you and I drive.

Yeah man, they are funny dude, it's that British wit
.
Now it seems like some of the "lesser spending" teams aren't too happy with this budget cap business... I wonder why.

But what a crazy qualifying session this morning! Ferrari need some one in there with an actual brain, or at least someone that can tell time, LOL. But I am gutted for Kimi as the team have admitted they goofed their "calculations".
But I was happy to see the Ferraris at least move closer to the front runners, Massa just four tenths off Button's Q3 pace. Now if only McLaren could get there act together we'd have the best championship ever!
What about Button? That little sand bagger!
Good job by him and Vettle. It will be interesting to see the race weights of each car and should also be a cracking race.

^^^ I mad as hell!!!
Kimi and the team need to pull their heads out of their a$$es. Massa looks to be in a good spot though. KERS should be a big help on the start being a long straight.
Button does it again, Rubens has got to be so pissed. Jensen is his new Michael... lol...
Vettel has got a good shot, can't wait to see what happens.

My team is falling apart and I can't stand to see it happen any longer. I hope Luca makes heads roll over this one.
Brawn just looks unstoppable...
