Why.. I have no idea. If boost is allowed, I don't see why privileging one mechanism for increasing it is better than another (ECU) or another-another (special housings). Shrug.

My exhaust manifold cracked by 139,000 miles (and got diagnosed at about 140,000) so I had to get a new one.
On top of that, the flex section on my AMS "divorced and transformable" downpipe started coming apart. I got 8 years and 80,000 miles out of it, so I just wanted a new downpipe of the same kind.
I decided to get the HKS "sport catalyzer", too. The one that comes on the Evo X FQ360.

So, with new parts and some new tuning by Chris Carbee - still with the stock boost map - here are my new dyno results:

322 hp at the wheels. The highest point is at about 5800rpm, and it's part of a plateau that goes all the way to the rev limit.
324 lb-ft at the wheels, with the plateau going from about 3800 to 4400rpm.
There's no perceptible difference in turbo lag, throttle response, etc. I guess that's to be expected, since Mr. Carbee put so much effort into that back in 2016.

I'm happy with my new power and torque numbers, and the engine seems pretty healthy again.

...So if I have 322hp, measured on a DynoJet, how much do y'all think I have at the flywheel?
Is it time to buy an FQ360 badge yet?

Over the holidays I got an HKS Hi-Power (single pipe) exhaust.
I had the car dyno'ed again, with and without the "silencer" in place. I plan to scan the graphs and post them one of these days.

It made 314hp with the silencer and the engine was quiet enough that, while I was cruising at 70mph, the tires and wind were louder.
It made 331hp without the silencer, and was too loud for daily driving. But that noise will be fine on track day!
The old muffler shop exhaust had split the difference at 322hp.

So my mod list is now:
Dented intercooler (ever since my ex-wife hit that armadillo one night)
Whiteline adjustable rear swaybar.
K&N drop-in filter
ATP "divorced and transformable" downpipe
Lancer GTS wing
HKS "sport catalyzer"
HKS Hi-Power cat-back pipe.
Tuned by Chris Carbee with the stock boost map

You gained +17HP from silencer removal alone? That seems like a lot. Was boost similar between the runs?

The shops way of looking at it was I lost 17hp with the silencer in place.
To me, it seems like a reasonable difference considering the huge difference in sound.

The boost should definitely be the same from one run to the next. The car could reach the boost limits the first time it was tuned, so that shouldn't have changed.

The silencer is basically a plug. I can def see it making a 15-20whp difference.

Got it. I was imagining a more traditional flow-through muffler versus straight pipe. Makes sense after I looked through some photos of that exhaust.

Yeah, I've been describing it to friends as a big metal cork to stuff in the tailpipe.

I remembered to scan the new dyno graph, this morning:

The blue (lower) curves are with the silencer, of course.

4th gear pull? Your stock turbo at sea level spools a bit earlier than mine does at 4500ft altitude.

That torque hits nice and early. Def a good STU powerband.

I think I need to try driving an STU car after SM for 10yrs to see the difference.

It might also make a difference that I have the shop start at 2000rpm.
I've seen an awful lot of dyno graphs out there that start at 3000rpm, or higher, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that affects the shape of the curve.

2024 update: I have 163,000 miles on my Evo, with my original engine and transmission. I give Chris Carbee and the stock boost map a lot of credit for that.
The car has been to 2 track days since he tuned it, the transmission is just barely showing signs of wear, and the engine isn't showing any.
At All Aspects Motorsports, they've said "This is the oldest Evo we've ever seen." They're used to seeing them on their 2nd or 3rd engine, and I don't think they've seen another with this many miles on it.
