A roll bar is a great first step to safety. I would look into the plates for mounting tho.

I should note that with the additional 1/4", the roll bar borderline doesn't fit with the headliner since it fits so perfectly from Autopower.

He is in CT. All he has to do is let the car sit outside in freezing temps and tada. It comes off as easy as can be. We at least get some benefits for living in the cold. lol

Would welding the AP roll bar to the chassis (Same points) 4 or 6 point provide more durability and strength than just the bolts?

If i had the AP race 4-point roll bar or 6-point welded in, as apposed to doing a custom 4 or 6 point cage, would either or be more or less secure?

I ask because i am at a crossroads now were as this is strictly a track car (Circuit Racing) and does not see the street. Looking for something that can pass for NASA time trials TTU, be turned into a full cage later down the line (Start off with a 4 point), be welded into place, and finally be just as safe as a custom 4 or 6 point.

An added bonus to this is that it keeps the costs down.

Input?

My .02

Welding in the AP roll bar would certainly provide a better mount, especially if the mounting feet were boxed-in to the body

The AP bar is spec'd w/ 1.750 x .120 DOM steel. I think a custom roll bar of the same configuration & spec would be similar in strength

Not sure about bar requirements w/ SCCA / NASA. Im just a track day guy

The AP roll bar is legal for SCCA level 3&4 time trials in the bolt in form. AP also sells a kit to add the front section to make a full cage. This is a bolt in option (needs to be welded to the main hoop tho) that is legal in both SCCA and NASA road racing. The biggest benefit of the AP system is the cost. You can get the full cage for under $1000. But, once you get into custom cages you will start to get into the $3000+ price range. The biggest thing between the two kind of cages is the fit. The AP front half of the cage comes straight down before the dash and mounts to the floor. A custom cages will be (or should be) designed to pretty much hug the roof and follow the A pillar much closer and can and should be mounted to the frame rails and not the floor. Either one is legal and will do the job. The custom cage will do a better job if you ever need it. An AP cage is still much better then nothing at all!

Thanks for the input Solenoid and jerdeitzel.

The AP roll bar than in my opinion is the way to go for the time being. Saves some cash and is legal for both SCCA and NASA, cant go wrong.

Very nice; good work! 1/4" is really thick... I'm certainly no engineer, but I'm thinking just a 1/8"-thick steel reinforcement base plate would still be a HUGE improvement in resisting punch-through of the paper-thin OEM floor, and that the roll bar would still (just barely) clear the roofliner.

Here are some crappy cell phone pics of my Autopower race bar installed (how-to install thread here):
