Head gasket leaked shortly after rebuild. Tore it down again, got head and block decked .001", no more issues. Both times fairly high end CBN decking mills were used.
The original surface is old, no longer smooth due to corrosion and heat cycling so the RA is wrong. And the factory finish is not quite as good as a quality machine shop can get it, especially if you take a few passes at it with 1000 grit on a big flat block.

I've never had an issue swapping heads/gasket in a built motor where the deck is more fresh.

ARP studs are fine to reuse a few times. If you get L19's, wipe them with a clean rag and put them in an oil bath so they don't corrode.

Oring'ed needs decked, and then the groove recut deeper.

Head is off and out getting skimmed. No major warping but certainly low spots will appear when just a thou is skimmed. Hoping it doesnt take much but should have it back today or tomorrow to reassemble.

Now to address the power steering pump, leaking axle boot, cracked slave line, and drop .2-.3deg of camber all around.

Although the combined price of those replacement parts adds up to more than 2X a remanufactured alternator, so maybe I'll be getting some aftermarket replacement parts.

Also, the alternator replacement job isn't as easy as it looks. It's not exactly hard, but I greatly underestimated how much time and effort it was going to require because it looks like it should be a quick job.
YW

I think ideally, you would diagnose what's wrong with your alternator and just replace that component. There is a bunch of info on diagnosing the alternator in the factory service manual. If you're just looking to do a refresh, new brushes and bearings would be good.

Dallas what HG did you go for? I'm keen to see if anybody has tried a SCE Vulcan Cut Ring. Also are you running larger washers on the head studs?

Cometic gasket since thats about all we have available for stroker motors. Need an 87mm gasket. I was running the standard ARPs and this time I swapped to L19s (cautiously handled, never touched with bare hand just in case).

Where his gasket went isn't typically where you see a soft head lose the gasket. I'm sure it's fine. Our heads are super hard anyways.

Lol, Spare motor is in my future. But partly just cause I like building motors. Once we move I can go get a junkyard block to get started. Id like to have a spare of everything but the hard part becomes doing spares with some of the more expensive parts like diffs.

One reason to have spares, theyre only getting harder and harder to find. Need to collect!

The heads go soft the moment theyve been overheated. have tested a few.

Got to remember also some of us have cars that are a more modified and extreme than others and some people here are just casual racers.

Ive actually been meaning to build up a spare motor for a while. ive got 2 spare transfer cases. 2 ring n pinions, a RS rear diff spare, full voltex front end etc. cause you never know what you might break and when ur in a championship its all about being able to get back out there for the next race

Does anyone know the spec on how much grease to put in the axle boot? Ive been leaking for a few events and going to get a better clamp on one. But It'd probably be good to pull that end apart, clean it, refill with CV-2. Just not sure what volume it takes and cant find any reference.

EDIT: Nevermind, found it!

3.5oz Outer
5.1oz inner.
