Back on the topic of handguns, I'm looking to pick one up in the next month or so. I'm thinking a Springfield Sig. I like the heaviness and the all metal feel. I plan on having a permit to conceal but it's not tough to hide **** on my 6'5 frame (tag opp.#1). Let me know what you've got experience with. This would also be a "home security" option, although I live in a nicer neighborhood in the North Hills, you just never know.

my first gun that i bought was a smith and wesson 910 which is a full sized 9mm ACP. i bought it because it was a decent price, felt good in my hand (tag opp. #2), and had the classic look of an auto pistol. what i learned after carrying for a while ( i got my CCW the same day as my gun) is that a full frame gun sucks to carry. it also had a standard sized which if you're concealing under a shirt or hoodie can snag if you need to draw down. as a side note the gun wasn't very accurate, but that's another story.

the next handgun i bought is the current one i own (i sold the 9 because after i got this one it didn't matter). it's the Kimber Ultra Carry II.

this gun is still fairly heavy, all metal, but it is very compact. much easier to carry than a full frame. it is based on the classic J frame .45 ACP but only has a 3.5" barrel (tag opp #3) it holds 6 +1 rounds of .45 ACP, and if that doesn't solve your problem not much will. it feels excellent, and has the dovetail safety along with a more traditional thumb safety (which might be an issue if you're a lefty but i think they have special south paw models). the gun is incredibly accurate and very well balanced. it puts together nice tight groupings even though i'm not always the most steady shot.

the only drawback to the kimber is that after you put about 200 - 250 rounds through it it will start jamming on the feed if you're using regular rounds. my killer rounds don't (for reasons which i will explain in a few paragraphs). not really an issue in day to day though because i always clean my gun after it is fired, and if i get in to a firefight that required me to be laying down 250 rounds i am some serious trouble and an occasional jam is the least of my worries. so i have only had issues with this while doing some heavy shooting at the range.

it does have a regular style hammer, but it doesn't have the sharp hook at the end like my original S&W did. obviously not a consideration with the sig (if i am looking at pics of the correct gun) because it appears to have an internal hammer.

what caliber are thinking of getting?

one other thing i like to share with other gun owners (if you don't already know) are the CorBon Pow-R-Ball rounds.

http://www.handgunsmag.com/ammunition/corbon_1209/

obviously not target rounds. these are my self defense killers. absolutely nasty little buggers. they have a +P magnum load and are a traditional hollow point with a twist. they have a polymer cap stuffed in the top of them. the cap in combination with the +P load give these rounds a significantly higher muzzle velocity than your standard hollow point, and upon impact help the round expand more as well and feed in the breech smoothly and cleanly each time.

i've test shot a box or two of these from my gun just for fun and they have a noticeable difference when they leave the barrel. a fun demonstration i used to do for friends when i took them to the range was to load the last round in the magazine as a Pow-R-Ball and the rest as normal cheap target rounds.

bap-bap-bap-BOOM.

i've never a springfield armory handgun. if you do pick it up, let me know how you like it. i'm long over due for a new gun and have been debating with myself over an assault rifle, shotgun, or another handgun. i am leaning towards something smaller to carry like a Kahr .40, those things weigh about as much as a cell phone unloaded.

How about a para-ordinance? When I was looking for a gun I always liked the 4" barrel 45.

I've only ever owned revolvers. S&W 357mag, 45. and an old 45. Long barrel target gun.

I'd love a gun and there have been a few occasions when I certainly could have used one. Well, in retrospect, it could have made things quite a bit worse...but still...I want one. What do you guys think of Glocks?
