This is all probably unreasonable to do on a budget, which I completely understand and is probably why the estimate to do it is high. But I would never want to skimp and half *** anything.

You need to part it and move on. Lets be honest, you won't be keeping the car forever, and it's value now has significantly diminished even if you fix it 100 percent. Cut your losses, make some cash on the car and part out, and put it down on your next vehicle of choice.
