Yeah, hagakure, as EvoRider said that's just where they steal most of the cars and even the ones stolen elsewhere most of the time end up there.
I don't think anyone here is racist. Just a sad reality
Also, one of the reasons is Newark/Elizabeth are port cities/towns and most of the stuff from there can dissapear in a heartbeat.
I believe that Jersey City (right next to Newark) is the leading town in car thefts in the US, or at least it was...

Question

So when the cops catch car thieves, what kind of punishment do they end up getting? What disincentives exist for stealing cars?

Want to avoid having your car stolen ever again?

http://www.tekniqauto.com/US/home.htm

Tekniq Auto has a solution. They have a removable steering wheel assembly. When you leave your car you pop off the steering wheel and no one can drive your car anywhere. Mind you people could still tow your car away, but I haven't heard of many theives doing that, especially the low-end thieves.

It's very simple installation and you can have it made to use any wheel, even your stock wheel. Mind you the airbag won't function anymore, but nonetheless.

I don't work for them, but it's something that I'd consider installing if I drove an Evo, Sti or any other car.

You all should look into it. Because for $299, it's cheaper and more effective than a car alarm. I mean whose going to break into a car where they see no friggen steering wheel.

Wow, I think the immobilizer on the Evo really must make a difference...I'm shocked that the Sti doewsn't have one. I don't live in a high crime area, but if I did I think that an immobilizer would be a pretty important feature.

Unfortunatley "the oranges" is the capital of joyriding in the North East, that's just a fact. Once they dump your ride....it's over...systematically stripped

Reports are that next year's model with have one, which is a smart move on Subarus part. Hey have many evos been stolen in the tri-state area?

I don't know what punishment but I think death penalty would be appropriate.
To me this crime has same weight as if someone raped my kid.

Engine immobilizer or coded key is a chip in your key which when you stick it in the egnition knows that it's the right key to start the car. Don't have it - it's hard to start the car.
This will scare away joyriders and small time thieves (which are majority out there).
Pro thiefs will always steal your car even if you had a sattelite with a laser aiming at your car.
Yes, all Evos come with immobilizer.

I think what we really need here and is a cheap solution is Mul-T-Lock or Defendlock.

Mutilock has a screwed up web page so it doesn't show their car products but it pretty much looks the same as Defendlock:

http://www.defend-lock.com/auto.php

I would get the one of the bottom three models.
As far as I know it welds to the chassis and the key-hole part goes out with the key once you remove the key leaving your shifter locked and noone can change gears.

Not sure why it wasn't brought to the US already, it exists for decades in Europe.

Despite all these great products you guys are coming I would still reccomend an alarm of some sort. Loud piercing sound will always deter a thief especially if they turn it off. DEI now makes alarms set up for multiple sirens and even if they cut your battery wire they have backup batteries that will still cause the alarm to go off.

There are many options, as I used to install alarms professionally. If you would like more information AIM me at VelocityKoncepts and I will be glad to point you in the right direction.

Keep in mind, sometimes its your "friends" that rob you.

newark also has a lot of chop shops... i've seen GTIs ... Escalades ... MP3s .. Subarus parked out on the street ... even if u have a kill switch it wont stop them from taking rims, hids, systems, cd players and such ... i go to school in newark .. i never park on the street. i park right next to the security gaurd at the gate of my school parking. he knows who i am. the best thing to do is dont take ur car there at all... if u gotta take dont leave it for a long time or atleast use the club on the wheel or the brake... theres a niiice *** civic parked on the street and the owner puts a boot on his tire before he goes to class..

I said that pro's will take your car no matter what.
Alarm or no alarm. Pro's can disable them in matter of seconds.
Also, I wouldn't want anyone but me installing my alarm because like you said - sometimes "friends" rob you.
Most cars in my country get stolen when you leave the keys in the car wash, when you get your stereo or alarm installed etc.
