I've run Kumho Ecsta MX, Conti extremes, Hankook Ice Bears, Falken 512's and BFG KDW's on my evo.

The Kumhos sucked, I hated them, I will never buy another set of Kumho's that aren't an R compound as long as I live

My tire of choice from now on will be the BFG's they just rock, you pay a little extra for them but they perform awesome in everything but snow and they las about twice as long as any other tire ive run.

My tire of choice for an all season would be the Falken Ziex 512. You just can't beat that tire for price and performance and wear. It works great in the snow and rain, is reasonably sticky on the dry stuff, and wear is actually pretty damn good. I've run them on my 2.5, my wifes audi, and the evo, and loved them on every one of them.

I think if you are looking for a great tire on a budget that is the only way to go.

bullfrg, he said he lived down in St. George. Thus the snow doesn't seem to be much of a concern.

All-season do suck...I usually have two seperate sets of tires. A snow tire, as no all season can touch the snow performance of a snow tire, and an ultra high performance summer tire for April - October driving.

That's why I was saying ultra high performance summer tires, not an all-season tire. Lots of the ultra high performance summer tires perform as good if not better then competition tires on the street because the rubber is designed to grip well without a lot of heat.

Rob, I'd love to see how the A046 compares to the BFG KD tires. The A046 is just about the only tire I've driven on the street that I couldn't get to slip. I was just testing driving the car, so I didn't get to crazy, but I tossed the car into a corner fast enough that I was pretty sure it was going to slide and it just stuck the corner, even when I intentionally tighted the line just to see if they would slide. Could have been the ACD and front LSD though too?

03whitegsr, I understand your argument as it is the reason I had two set of wheels for my BBY Evo and I have run dedicated snows on my cars for a number of years. The thing is awd allows you to run a all season tire and have equal performance as a rwd or fwd car on snows (consumer reports testing). When it came to replace the A046 I decided I would be better served with an all season in 99% of my street driving and this would allow me to have a set of race wheels and tires without getting a 3rd set of wheels. I know he is St George but like most people I am sure he does not stay put all winter. An all season tire would allow him to run up to SLC and not have to worry about the weather. Everyone will find their own solution to the problems but for me I do not need to run a UHP summer tire as I am not using it to the fullest in most of my driving, when I would use them to their fullest (autox and track days) I have a dedicated set of tires for that.

Yea I've run several "street" tires and am currently on the KDW's and love them for everyday use. I do agree with mike about saving the money for the race tires! For the track I am on Advan AO48 an love them. I have run several R compounds (but not hooisers yet) and these have been my favorite thus far.

Wesside, these are the tires I would consider (235/45 17):
Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S $611 shipped from Tirerack
Kumho Ecsta ASX $388 shipped DT or $392 from TR
Continental Extreme Contact $440 shipped fro TR
Falken Zeix ZE-512 $348 shipped from Discount Tire and there is a $25 rebate (mine have been fine so far
How are those Kumho Ecsta ASX?
I thought you meant the Kumho Escta SPT those looked pretty decent. Anyone known if there a decent tire? there on tireRack for $88 a tire. I might go with something like that because I might only seen snow a couple times down here in St. George once this year?? Right now its 30°
I do have family in SLC that I might be seeing this winter but that might only be a trip or two if I did so all seasons would help in that situation.

TireRack seems to have the best deals that I've seen on the net, maybe the local discount tire would match pricing?
Yea 235/45/R17 sorry my bad Don't know why I put 225

I'd have to full agree with Bullfrg ... if the idea is coming up from St. George into snow land, and having a snow capable all season will be a very large factor in determining the tire.

Personally I've run Conti's for the past now three winters, and 1.5 summers. I'm now on my fourth winter and have replaced them with about 15,000 miles. I do think they have done a rev. on the tire as the newer models seem to grip better on both wet and dry. Another thing about the Conti's is I tend to like to run them about 2psi above manufacture recommendations as their side wall tends to be a little soft. They don't have near the grip as other tires, but then again, their slide characteristic is very predictable. When the first set started to look a little iffy last winter, I took them in for a $40.00 siping and they immediately regained a little snow grip, enough I could run them the rest of the season and part of a spring before putting on the grippies.

I haven't tried the Falkein 512s but recently turned away from them over some inet reports that once they lose a little tread, you get a very non-linear snow / rain grip performance drop-off. I didn't want to take that chance. Another tire I'd love to try are I think the Avon M5000s. I haven't seen a store that sells them yet here. Another really strong contender was of course the BFGoodrich All Seasons. I think they are called, from memory, the KDWs? The EVO suspension tuner, and race car driver Paul Gerrard seems to swear by the whole BFG line, so depending on price, those would be a very good option.

One thing I noticed lately is if you know the right person in the tire business they tend to find some really good deals out there, even for brand name tires. I went to BigO over an alignment one day, and started talking about 17" versus 18" tires on the EVO (he liked EVOs) and he brought up his finding database, and started making me deals left and right over tires that he could 'find'. Some of the sizes were not an exact match, but it was like the difference of getting a 235 versus a 245. Or getting 255s for the back and 235s for the front. It tells me they have the database resources to look for tires, if they're willing to put the time in for you. In some cases, he was able to strip off like $30.00 to $40.00 per tire.

Good Luck ... let us know what you find and/or like/dislike.

Cheers,

~j.

BTW ... I was just curious on the whole bike thing ... sometimes the type of vehicle just needs to kiss right in order to get out on track. Personally ... I need to get my sorry rear out of school up here in Loganland (ugh!) and put more time in on any wheeled vehicle. Too bad the EVO is the most expensive to get on track. My SV650 and KTM conv. to Motard are the best options I have going right now.

j.

BTW BTW ... one thing that Tire Rack doesn't have is better shipping rates. It will cost you a pretty penny per tire to have them shipped, and then if you're not getting rims with them, it will cost you again to have them installed. I've found going to a local tire dealer, and saying what you've found online, and why you'd like to have that tire, usually opens up the options to get what you want / need.

Seth,

Go to a black-market Skyline Forum. Or at least type complete sentences that makes sense.

A. You didn't put 50K on a single pair of Advans or Azenis tires.
B. You ran all-seasons.
C. Advans at the speed of traffic in snow is a fools game.
D. Good Day.

I just looked up that Falken Ziex 512 but looks like they only have 225/45/17's
Here you go, can't go wrong with these tires......

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...r=45&tc=FALHV4

They make the Ziex in a large variety of sizes, check out discounttiredirect.com
You can typically get a local discount tire to come close to the online prices.

Meh, to each their own. I don't see the point in buying race rubber unless you are actually going to use it. If you aren't going to track race the car, then you might as well get some good rubber to enjoy the car.

If he is going to track race the car, then cheap all seasons would probably be the way to go with a second set of race rubber.

I get to park the EVO this winter though, so no all-seasons for me. It will be race rubber and UHP summer tires for the EVO.

Yea no track time this winter. When summer comes I'd love to get on the track. But by then I could get a new set of tires or rim/tire combo

I think the falken's or those kuhmo's is my best option

I was looking at the Falken 451's but those Ziex ZE-512 seem to have a really good deal on pricing. Would there be any reason to pick the 451's over the Ziex ZE-512?

That is the tire I am running currently. I did really like my Continentals though.
