For crying out loud, I emailed a local mitsu dealership to get a quote for a timing belt, timing belt tensioner & the water pump kit. They also suggest replacing the balancer belt and the balancer belt tensioner. The whole group of parts is over $820 bucks!!!

Timing belt $86.99 + taxes
Water pump kit $344.50 + taxes
Timing belt tensioner $158.99 + taxes
Timing belt tensioner pulley $79.50 + taxes
Balancer belt $51.75 + taxes
Balancer belt tensioner $63.75 + taxes
Coolant $34.75 + taxes

Now I'm at a crossroads. After hearing about your car Crans its got me second guessing that they did the maintenance. I know it wasn't traded to a mitsu dealership, was a volvo one and they drove it for 35,000km. Now the cars reaching 125,000km. She runs great, smooth with no issues but maybe I should replace all this. If I do, where could I get OEM parts for at least half of what the mitsu dealership wants? I checked both sites listed in this thread and was only able to locate the belt kit and water pump.

Try mitsubishiparts.net for better prices but it won't be half. Not every part has to be oem unless that's a big thing to you. There are quality kits out there that are less than 800 bucks.

Yeah Carmen, don't buy from the dealer dude...mitsubishiparts.net sells the same genuine parts for half the price of a canadian mitsu dealer...make sure they ship USPS, and NOT UPS or FEDEX...

Did I get all the parts needed right? Someone had a DIY post in this thread with part numbers. I used that to find the parts but some of the items mentioned did not have part numbers so I was unable to locate them. Do I really need to change all this? I wish this stuff was easier for a regular office worker like me to understand.

and I gotta ask, how does this kit compare? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Timing-Belt-...a810d2&vxp=mtr

Same grade of parts? All the same ones as I found on http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/?

Well genuine vs non genuine. How do they compare ? Who knows without using both.

Until my RA I always went with non genuine parts. The only reason I buy so many dealer parts now is because of oemmitsubishiparts.com. Between their prices and great service, it works out for me. Add in the lack of availability of some parts at my local auto store and using them just makes great sense.
However, I have come to find that Rock Auto is excellent too.
I have had very few bad experiences with non genuine parts and the 2 times I can think of, I just replaced them with less cheap non genuine parts and it worked out.

My balance shaft belt is non genuine because when I did my timing belt I forgot to get it when I ordered online. I cannot tell a difference.

At $100 less before delivery, I know which I'd choose today.

Seen. What about the timing tensioner pivot, crank position sensor/plug, crank, oil pump and balance shaft? I didn't find part numbers for these. I even wonder if I really need all this stuff. Seems others did the belts, tensioner and water pump.

just the belts, pulleys, tensioner, and water pump...you shouldn't need to replace any sensors or sprockets.

I'm not sure how i feel about the "mitsuboshi" timing belt, but like many other things, it's probably the same ****...you'll loose a fair bit of coolant when you do the water pump, i guess it couldn't hurt to replace the thermostat while the head is empty of coolant...

I can't imagine if we had to replace the crank, oil pump, and balance shafts with the timing maintainence.

Isn't the front balance shaft a oil pump? I bought a gates belt and it's great.. I've read about some people not having a good experience with them.. The oem belt snaps at about 120k miles(not sure if belt was replaced before) or so i read which to me doesn't seem like a very good belt some Toyotas will go 180-200k miles Some don't even break

I have continental belts, I haven't had any issues and the timing maintainence has been done for about 2 years or 10,000 miles. I have continental tires also, which is what have me confidence in getting the belts.
