i went to my dealer and they insisted that all i needed was the balance belt and the timing belt. i asked how much for pulleys and tensioners and they kept telling me none of that was needed so to replace just the 2 belts they said that it would be 420. I went to a smaller shop thats done work for me before and they said if i brought all the parts in, that timing belt kit, auto tensioner, and water pump they would put it all on for 200

for my first timing belt replacement, do I need to do everything ie. the $450 kit from amazon? Or just the $80 kit from the advanced autoparts? I really don't want to be cheap and want whats best for my car, but just like everyone, I have a lot of stuff to pay off and can't really afford it. I;m also needing to replace my front strut assembly, so thats more money there.

You don't need all that stuff but it's a good idea to change them. You can get all that for much cheaper. Just shop around. I got my timing belt kit from autopartswarehouse.com for $80 plus the water pump.

i say it depends on your mileage, your first timing belt service, you could probably reuse the pulleys and what not, but if your mileage is quite high you should change everything including tensioner, water pump, etc. I replaced a lot of stuff, cause when my belt went, i was at like 165,000km.

Did you not do the 60k service?

thank you guys for answering my question. For the meantime I will only get the $80 kit from autopartswarehouse.com and will replace the whole thing once I reach 120k ish miles. I need to do my struts, so I have to save for that too :/ but with my job, I average $80-100+ in tips every time I work, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Hopefully I can get things done within the next month.

For another $80 I would get the water pump as well since you are already in there. If it will fail later on and you'll have to replace it, it will be a pain to get to it.

This.

Timing cover bolts to the water pump, meaning you'll have already removed the crank and idler pulley to remove the cover...just do it while you're in there.

no skill involved, but regardless, get the water pump so you don't have to pay them to do the same thing twice.

If it's the one in that picture, then yes that is the one, but it doesn't fit all lancers, cause the 4G94 2.0L Lancer's water pump is way different. Dunno about the Evo, i don't have one of those, LOL! i wish i did.
