Grinding in second

Alright. this is a problem I always though was just due to owning old cars. Tonight I was driving down and I got on it hard in first gear andwhen I pop it into second a get a bad gring sound and it goes into gear slowly. Is there something I am doing to cause this problem. I had the clutch down on the ground hard to. so I know its not me being lazy with the clutch.

My old car did this a lot but I had a bad trans and when I swaped for a different trans I put a sports clutch on and enver properly bled the brakes so it always felt weird and did jstu about the same thing btu I always assumed it was do to not fully installing and maintaining that car well.

:\ I dunno. Tell me what Im doing wrong.

Our trannies sometimes grind on the 1-2 shift when you're shifting hard and flooring it. The problem is that the engine is moving around too much in the engine compartment which messes up shifting. Guys who drag race have had this issue, too. The fix it to fill your front motor mount to keep your engine from moving around too much.

If it's doing it all the time it could be the syncro.

don't shift into 2nd at red line, go to about 6400-6600 rpms, i know we can get it to 7000, but the action is not fast enough for this stuff. grinding will be there as long as you do this. Also, get a short shifter. this helps alot, also change your tranny fluid, GM sycromesh FM is great. IF you get lube make sure its a GL4 rated

for the record, i used to shfit just b4 fuel cutoff (i think it sover 7k) and never grinded or missed 2nd while doing so. last few times out, i started shifting at about 6100 and grinded 2nd 2 out of 4 runs. first 2 times i EVER did it while racing.

i know it prob wont help, but im gonna change the tranny fuild soon. i got redline stuff waiting at home. wheres the drain? theres 2 bolts on the back of the tranny, but i dunno which one to take out (or if its either). first manual car i had to service, so im in no hurry on this one.

also put one of the stock rubber bushings back in. i think the smaller of the bushings was too tight. taking it out actually made the shifting a bit smoother, but it does feel a TINY bit more sloppy. beter over all tho.

I was told by 2 Mitsubishi dealerships that using any tranny fluid other than mitsu fluid will void the warranty on the tranny. Might want to check first if this matters to you.

They cannot void your warranty for using non-Mitsubishi tranny fluid, as long as the tranny fluid you use meets the minimum ratings specified in the manual. It's the same reason that they can't void your warranty for doing your own oil changes with whatever brand of oil (as long as the oil meets whatever minimum requirements for the engine)
