Nice that they may warrantee it. For those who suggested not admitting to any mods I had a similar thing happen to a friend. He had installed carbon synchros and a kaaz LSD. Blew out 2nd gear, tried to cover it all up saying it was stock. They warranteed the tranny job. So a replacement came in a box they installed it and shipped his back as a core.
Some lucky sap will be getting a kaaz diff from the rebuilder.
As soon as you race a car all warrantee expectations should go out the window. While I stand behind my work if someone blows one of my engines on the first corner of the first lap I do not expect them to ask for a warrantee. Auto-x is racing and I have heard that some vehicles had warrantees cancelled because they were sighted at the dragstrip.

Update.
It's done. Good news and bad news however.
The rebuilt the transmission with all new synchros, hubs, collars etc. but there was a catch. They took out my stage 3 clutch and put in the stock one because it was worn. actually quite glad as i'm planning to sell the car within a year. I pay for the clutch, mistu pays for the tranny under warranty. Not mad or anything at that, thats not the bad news.
the bad news is that i came out, looked at my car and there's a long red line across the passenger side door about 1.5 - 2 m long. looks like whoever drove my car clipped another car (probably parked in the lot). They said that they will take a look at it and fix it though as i had to run to an appointment right after i picked it up.
so overall, I am quite impressed with the work they did. tranny is still a bit stiff shifting, and havn't tested out whether they took out my diff or not yet. still getting used to the super soft clutch and breaking in my tranny.

right on, overall good news.
do you figure the soft clutch is due to the stage 3 clutch being replaced with an OEM one? I never had a stage 3 clutch or anything like that so I wouldnt know.

2nd and 3rd gear syncros always take the most load. Most trannys are designed with a 2nd gear syncro larger than all the rest, guess they didn't make 3rd large enough.

I'm liking the stock one though now.. it's soft and nice for street driving, but we'll see how track goes.. if i track at all this year.
as for the diff. On the work order it said "installed rebuilt transmission" and below it is lists the 3 and 4th gear synchro, and other parts. what i'm wondering is if the rebuilt transmission is my old one which was rebuilt, or if they put in a rebuilt transmission that was ordered form somewhere else and cored the old one back. i dunno... gonna do a road test right away when i find an icy road.

5 speed. It's the ralliart, they all came with 5's.
NWM_tech: The car wasn't washed, it was near closing time when I got called and it just so happens that I was on my way to an appointment passing by the dealership when I got called, so I shot in, and got my baby back... not completely.. see below...
now.. for some more news, this is grim...
I'm really dissapointed now... It seems like pure neglect by the mechanic, who seems that they rushed to get everything done by the end of the day..
first things noticed: red line going across the side of the car.. looks like it's the paint scrapped down to the red primer. ok, no biggie, it happens, but I wish they mentioned it.
Second thing noticed: improper/no alignment was done after they removed the shafts, so the car pulls to the right (slightly dissapointed at this point)
Third thing noticed: went to check tire pressures to make sure it's not pulling because of the tires, then looked at the front left wheel well (the side the transmission is located) and the liner is missing. look under the car, all of the left side underpanels are missing, and my left suspension arm and steering rack is FULL of snow as a result (now I'm super dissapointed and going: WHAT THE $%^$!?!)
thats all I noticed so far... I'll go over it completely when the sun is out and I can check it thoroughally. It's been a long day with only 3 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, and now it's 3:00AM
on a positive note.. the LSD is still in =) and the transmission works quite smoothly... but man... it's like... what the hell...

If you can't get satisfaction,, then go straight to the DSM (Mitsu district service manager) and see what he says. If he won't help it's time to find another dealer/repair shop.
I can tell you why all this happened. The tech isn't fully qualified to do this job because there aren't enough qualified techs out there. Even if he is qualified Mitsu barely pays enough in warranty for the tech to carefully take his time and do the job right. You might (but not necessarily) have fared better if you just paid to have it done, because non-warranty repairs pay the tech more.
It's difficult to find a good tech, word of mouth, info from forums. If you find one get his name and request him when you bring your car in.

not surprised it wasn't washed, Mitsu dealers are low volume, sometimes can't afford to hire a full time lot attendant. Still it should be washed, especially on a big job like this. But as you've already admitted having them pick up the tab is a benefit, maybe a wash on top of that shouldn't be expected.
absolutely no excuse for this. You need to go back to the same dealer and see if you can get all these problems corrected. Talk to the service manager (prefer face to face), none of this waiting for the person that originally helped you cuz their not there. Go straight to the head person in service. You should get, paint touch up, diagnose/align, splash panels replaced. Politely tell him you are going to ding them as hard as possible on the quality survey (but tell him you will give him straight A's if he does the right thing).

Here in Alberta, "automotive service techs" is a registered trade, so it's illegal if a fully qualified person is working as a tech, so chances are they are 'fully qualified'.
I used to work at honda though as a lot attendant washing used cars, so I would chat with the mechanics on my break, they all had their certificate, but some of them cared about their work and wanted to do everything right, but others just didn't care and did everything without attention to detail.. and it looks like i got one of those techs.
thanks for your posts and helping me get through this
