Air Filter Shootout Test - Results!

3.125 filter: 6.25" high 17" girth (radius=2.7") surface area: 106 (cyl) + 22.9(top) = 128sqin
4.5 filter: 6" high 20" girth (radius=3.2") surface area: 120 (cyl) + 32 (top) =152sqin
**EDIT** look at the pics, the filter media is more than .25" different in height. I'll see if I can get new measurements from perrin.
So the new filter has ~85% of the surface area of the old filter. However, in the real world, most of the air will end up being sucked through the tip and top section of the filter, as that is where most of the fresh air is being delivered. Since I have an undertray, tranny, piping, frame, etc on all the other sides of it, ultimately it is the more the filter media that will dictate flow and less total surface area (as long as they are mostly the same size).
It'd be cool to see any fluid dynamics tests that have been done on this, actually.
Which new filter, the one I put on yesterday?
I/we don't run a shop, and don't own a dyno, so hopefully I get time to do a quick before/after next time I'm on one of our local awd dynos.

So the new filter has ~85% of the surface area of the old filter. However, in the real world, most of the air will end up being sucked through the tip and top section of the filter, as that is where most of the fresh air is being delivered. Since I have an undertray, tranny, piping, frame, etc on all the other sides of it, ultimately it is the more the filter media that will dictate flow and less total surface area (as long as they are mostly the same size).

All our foam filters are oiled with special thick, oil that clings to the foams structure. This special oil is what makes our filter, filter! The oil is what stops the dirt from passing through the filter getting into your engine. The oil is what catches the tiny little particles that would normally pass through the open holes in a dry type filters. The only dry type filters you will find around our shop are OEM ones we have thrown away or our foam filters in the middle of being cleaned! Dry filters rely on the very very small openings (as seen in the pics above) to stop dirt. Then they rely on being cleaned very often to get rid of the dirt to keep it flowing freely. "

That does look like an amsoil but check the top chrome ring of your filter, does it say amsoil?
