AEM EMS Cold Start

My tuner couldn't do the cold start since I couldn't leave the car overnight to do the cold start or warmup enrichment table setup.

any idea what primeter I should be targeting for this?

my mods:

272/264e HKS cams
RMR Intake +pipe
mbc
BR TBE
BR FMIC Deluxe w/ LICP
22 psi

running on NGK Iridium plugs. (tuned on).

any help will be great.

As of now, it takes about 4 to 5 crank with 5 second intervals on each crank without engine cranking to get the car to start up.

when it does start up, it'll go up to 2000 rpm and down to 600 rpm, and it'll just go up and down until the car gets warmed up.

thanks.

by the way, what I gathered from searching is either check all the crank ignition check buttons or throw more fuel to the warmup richment table or make ignition pulsation longer.

But if someone could tell me step by step where I should look at to do all this that would be good.

Thanks!

With the AEM it's not unusual for it to take 4 or 5 cranks to start the car. It has to "stat sync" to "ON" before it fires up. Would be nice if it was instant such as the stock ECU, but unfortunately it's not. Maybe one day AEM will change how that fuction is programmed...

If your having troubles when it's cold like a sputter and then it dies, I would add more fuel in the warm up enrichment graph under the engine startup template. I would imagine your tuner has some values in there already, they just may need tweaked a bit for better cold starting.

this should help to lower the cranking required to sync, between this & playing with the Start & Advanced Start Templates ive got my AEM firing up on the second crank.

also, make shure your timing & fuel base tables & trims are all in spec & not overcompensating

I think there is a setting where you have to tell the ems to turn the ac off at certain throttle, so it wont stall out.

that and you need to make a ac fuel table to compensate for the idle.

well the aem is set up to cut the ac off at 80% full throttle. The idle just sucks...

I got mine at 40% cut off and my tuner acutally did the idle for the ac along with the regular idle.

Idle is sorta lean now resting at 1100 RPM or so, hitting 15.2 ~16.0 time to time instead of 14.6 afr.

when my ac turns on, it's at 1300 rpm.

I did hear that idle setting on the evo is pretty tricky...

Before you steal my thread, can anyone tell me how the warmup enrichment table works?

I'm going from 80 to 0, and it's dependent of the coolant temperature right now.

and when the car starts, it goes up to 1500rpm then drops down to 500rpm almost stalls then goes up and down until the engine gets warmer...

Thanks.

Ok, I've spent about 2 mornings with my car and I fixed the problem completely.

It idles just like stock, warms up without rpm going up and down, and it's perfect.

I'm actually proud of myself for figuring this out, since I don't know the first thing about aem ems 2 weeks ago, now I know 80% of the functions by heart.

woohoo!

eh... I have to sorta see how yours setup to see what needs to be changed.

It's basically the fuel mixture at the beginning and there are about 7 functions that you could use to make the car function perfectly.

it's mostly off of coolant temp, fuel, and rpm add + time.

This does take about 2 mornings to make it right.

if you want, send me your map or share it with me, I'll look at it then suggest what you should change.

of course, always consult with your tuner first before sharing your map.
