economy tuning
I'm back to pump gas for a few days. Decided to try tuning my ignition map while on pump gas. Getting good results with the same map that I used for E85. Knock free except a very occasional knock sum of 2 for a few entries when accelerating through a load of 70-80. Responsiveness and power are much better. I can stay in vacuum for cruising 95% of the time, whereas before I would often have to go slightly into boost to get acceptable acceleration. Torque at low rpms is much better too. I can lug around at 1800-2200 rpm very easily now. I may try pushing up the timing even further in selected areas.
Would definitely be interested in seeing other people's pump gas timing maps.

I will do some more logging to work it out, but was a great start for me...
cheers
to every1 making this the most informative forum. You guys know who you are! And a direct thanks to MRFRED/ and to all for posting their maps! I would post my "before" but its very similar to most. I'll post the new one up when Im done w/ it.

Ok did some logging on the way home... While cruising, 0 knock!
I need to do a lil more logging to confirm, but so far so good! I did notice that in my logs I was actually hitting 41* on occasion. I will play some more...

i dont see any know at all during cruise. the only ti,e i see knock is the 1 count i get in the middle of these hot california days when im at 100% throttle 3000-4000prm after spool up im not sure y i get this but its never consistant. and besides that im good.
i got a cel for a random cylinder misfire but i think thats because i set my idle part of mivec into the 30's and i believe i red somewhere that doing that will cause thats cel light to trigger :-( im going to look threw some threads and see if thats the case but my logs show nothing but perfectness

Back on topic
I got my ECU closed loop under control. Now, I cruise in open loop at ~15.6:1 AFR. I also advanced the timing in the cruise load cells. My timing is now ~39*
I tested the set-up at low speeds on surface streets and at cruising between 60 and 70 mph and all is kosher.
Here are the AFR and Timing graphs. The tables are for 40 minutes of cruising to work:

And here are the rom tables:

The only thing that I could not get to work, is get the car to idle at 15.xx:1. I tried setting the tables below the load and throttle % that I logged at idle and it did not work.
But the most important thing is that at cruise I am hitting 15.5-15.7:1 and the timing is advanced by 3* from stock in the cruise cells.
I have tested the set-up last night and today on my way to and from work.
One interesting note, the trims LTFT (mid and lo) and STFT stopped working when I did this. They did not change at all. So I flashed the car back to the stock load/throttle tables and the trims started moving again.
I have a full gas tank and will test the impact on fuel economy. I got 26.2 mpg on my last tank w/o any boost and not revving past 3000 rpm.

I never could figure out what the two openloop load maps do. Set them both to zero, top to bottom, doesn't make any difference.
As to why you're not getting the afr at idle, strange, that has worked for me at just about any map load setting. As a last resort try leaning out your fuel map a lot more from 0 to 30, up to around 1500 rpm.
One little fly in the ointment, there was an intermittent afr swing to rich during cruise.
I think I killed it by lowering my accel enrichment values. Might be something there for your idle too.
The dead fuel trims are a bonus.

26 mpg is pretty impressive. I thought I was doing good with the 20-21 mpg (city) I'm getting with my current pump gas setup. I figure I could get another 1-2 mpg when I lean out the afr by 1 point to 15.6, but that's still nowhere near 26 mpg. Can you post up your current MIVEC map as well?

I'm getting my cruising tune pretty tight now.
Cruise at around 15.6-15.7 AFR and 41-43* of timing.
i happened to notice adding this to a friends map who has 264/272 cams that he saw dramatic effects in gas consumption, a drastic change from his previous tune, apparently his timing adjustments are what made the biggest difference which now allows him to stay at around 5psi of vacuum and accelerate pretty impressively i actually surprized myself, hes around 39* but so am i and his car took to it better, possibly cause of the cams not sure i gotta log airflow and see whats up but his car is getting about 22mpg
