Anyone know how to build a bench ECU so I can ... "play around" with some ideas. I dont want to commit myself to anything or get people drooling yet. Especially since I NEEEEED a bench ECU.
bench ecu, like an ecu running in your house connected to a battery & simulation for spark/fuel, etc? wouldnt simulating an actual run file be enough or are you trying to do things over my head? lol
btw cant wait to test virtual dyno on this bad **** i just got on the interstate as soon as my cold goes away.

Dell XPS 17 / L702X
core i7 2670 QM (quad core 6mb cache / runs up to 3.1ghz with multiplier x15 / sandy bridge chipset 45w / 32nm )
8GB ddr3 1333mhz pc3 10600 ( can go up to 16GB on mobo)
Nvidia Geforce GT555m 3gb mem
7200RPM sata hd
should be interesting to see how much logger resolution i can get from this thing.. its a beast.
The only thing i didnt do was the SSD hd and more cpu, but can always change cpu out for stronger if need be later, plus dell prob uses cheap *** thermal paste anyways.
im just now on the fence about formatting the os, although it seems kinda clean from dell which is surprising.. i figured it would be bloated with crap all over it. It came with win 7 64bit Home edition.. i was debating on installing my ultimate on it. I suppose I could just close some windows services though in msc and get the same thing lol.
so ill post some feedback once i get some time on the interstate where the roads are like airport strips around here

Ohh and nice laptop son
Work just gave me a new one ... Core i7 with a solid state drive in it. Its massive though. I like my smaller one about the size of yours with the i5 in it. ~9 hours of battery life is always nice

Let me know how it works on that bad boy.
nah just have a few tricks up my sleeve and that would really help speed things up.

Looks like a nice clear screen on it. Show some pretty graphs on that sucker.

these new processors are so weird.. they self adjust via the turbo boost feature, but if you download the XTU 1.2 you can force it to hold a higher mhz / multiplier constantly.
and ya man.. I got this one with a 9 cell battery also and when i unhooked it and it said 9hrs remaining i almost **** myself.. 9 hrs is insane!
I'll post some graphs in here once i get some tests done. smoothing 1 should show how accurate/detail vd can be on the road with smooth surface.
Installing Ultimate over Home for what you mainly use this that laptop for (tuning) won't make any difference. Clean out whatever bloatware Dell has put on the system and leave as is.
To Brad's question. The bench stuff may have been on MalibuJack's acktivematrix site back in the day. Here's an old thread on it:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...-mostly-3.html
I believe by now there is enough protocol information that even at that level you should be able to come up with a reasonable software only simulator a lot easier but I could be wrong.

believe it or not theres not much bloatware on here.. im surprised. i was expecting a **** storm of things to delete and i only uninstalled 2 things so far.
I know it has to do with opening the program as administrator because i can drag and drop on my desktop when i just open it, and when i set it to administrator i can no longer drag and drop.
Drag and drop is a badass feature. Brad how can we fix this? right click exe and set it to no longer have admin permissions ?

@babaz7: this is due to a permission problem. Even if you have an admin account on a box ... the application may not be running as one. I request elevation of the permissions when running this way but I think drag and drop is one of the casualties of running with the UAC turned on. I turn that junk off on my own box.

UAC being turned off I think fixes it as I have it turned off and it works like a champ. Im going to ask one of the Solution Architects at work tomorrow that used to work for Microsoft on the CLR team about this issue tomorrow. It stems from requesting elevated permissions (my app does that) and it not being the same level as where you are dragging from .... I dont see any solutions online but thats what buddies are for. Ill ask him and see what he says. I do know its not a bug but its working as designed by MS. It prevents injection exploits. Here is a link to them discussing it: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2...k-on-windows-7
I just turned off UAC on laptop and then tried it and it still didnt work. So I uninstalled vd then reinstalled and still dont work.
The only difference from VD on my desktop vs laptop is the VD on the laptop shows a administrator permission shield on the icon.. where as on the desktop there is none.
so it didnt work :/

probably because it also can self update itself and when he updates xml files it needs write access to the application when its running.
