You can't enter a challenge where the rules have been set out to level the playing field, and then start out with tricks like that, that is unfair to us, the customers, the other contestants, and to the fact that it is a privilege to be part of such a contest.

I'm starting to be swayed by the masses. I was originally for a more budget type of deal more reflective of something that I might actually reasonable be able to do with my car. On the other hand everyone loves a winner. So i say now bring your A game. I would shy away from a stroker kit though. We all know that they make real power and might mate up nicely to a big turbo, but to me it doesn't really speak to what an awesome car the Evo is almost right out the box. Also, when the article comes out in C&D some folks will just look to see who the winner is, and some will actually read the article. Those that actually read will more likely be potential purchasers, and will be impressed by high subjective scores of drivablity and livablity. It seems to me that want you to make a very streetable car that can come close to laying the smack down on a new Vette or M3. Skip the stroker, keep the bottom end stock. And no matter what anyone says, anyone that is a current or prospective customer of yours will feel good knowing that they actually own or could own some of the products on the Evo that you enter in the constest.
{This contest is for 4 CYLINDER CARS ONLY! so he will compete against many turbo 4's that will be fully built and most likely stroked. No M3's no Vette's.}
True but this is Car and Driver, in the subjective section they usually have a standard stock high powered vehicle as the control, and will likley make an ascertion like "this $75,000 super charged S2000 isn't any quicker that a Z07" for instance. I always end up thinking that they make the tuner car seem much to do about nothing if it cost so much money, is arguably less reliable and doesn't match the performance of other stock cars (ie a Vette). If it were DSport or HCI it would be a different story.

I read this event every year. Can't wait to read about it more...
Cost is not an object: 50k Evo gets beat by 150k viper = Evo can't hang with big dogs.
150k Evo beats 80k viper= giant slaying hero... Period
That being said they always throw some subjective isht in to allow editors to favor cars they just "like ", as well as some stuff to keep out full blown race cars. This is where knowing the events (do they tell you?) and strategically picking your battles could give you the over-all.... honestly less anything less is not worth your time and effort.
Er, sorry... read the first dozen posts and got excited- missed the 4 banger only part^. But my rational is still the same- Go big!

On Pump gas? You have to stroke it for many reasons.
Faster spool up for a larger turbo.
Faster exits out of a turn
Better throttle response
More pump gas WHP
Can Run a 580BB/GT35R without too much compromise.
Slightly higher compression can be run (9.0-1 as compared to 8.8-1) to further aid in spool up and pump gas power.
Fatter torque across the board.
I bet you could make close to 500WHP or more on pump and 2.4 and you head/intake manifold. That alone in an Evo would just kill the competition.

Without having read any of the posts, here's my thought, as a buschur parts buyer (and fan
):
The only reason I think you ought to do a "budget" build it that you've made a great name in the Evo world as being a top-quality manufacturer who won't break the bank.
Otherwise, I think a win in this would cement you as the top "power-builder", and then people would still buy your economical parts. It's like "wow, Buschur won the Challenge and yet I can still buy their exhaust for a great price!"
Lastly, you don't want to risk losing to a Mini or a Neon
edit: My vote is go for the win...

Heres' my opinion. Everyone knows what Dave can do on a Budget, ESPECIALLY ON DSM's. Lets see what one of his built blocks can do on pump gas. I mean a 2.4 and a BIG turbo would just be a nasty combo. I would immagine a GT35R Sized turbo would spool close to a stock turbo and have more torque. I hope that thsi is the decision.
Forcefed,
I think we are on the same page as far as the octane testing goes. I talked to Larry today at C&D he says, 93 only, strickly enforced.
03BREVO8,
I asked about bringing two cars, the field is already over booked and we can only take one.

Biggest response I have to all of this is a GT35R will NEVER EVER come close to spooling like a stock turbo. Nitrous is not allowed and that is the only way to make a GT35R feel like a stock turbo on an EVO.
The GT35R would be a plus in getting to 150 mph though.
