Dave,
1. C&D loves comparing Evo's and STi's, so top spot would definitely squash all those lovable "competition tests"
2. C&D also loves commenting on the driveability and gotta have it factors, and, a totally built Evo may not be as suitable as some of the editors may like. Granted, this is not taken into account in the actual scoring, but the article will defnitely comment on this. My mechanic works at Acura and has seen 2-3 trade-ins of Evos and STis for 3.2 TL and other, more "comfy" cars
3. Working within a normal price range may sway people to the potential of simple mods, without a hefty price tag, from you. We know the potential power, and what your power mods can do, but, from a business standpoint, if you could sell 100 new Evo owners a street and emissions legal exhaust that doesn't compromise the ride and driveability too much, you would come out a winner.
4. Turbotrix has a sick Evo, and a nice saying "First in the 9's." That may work for them. But Buschur is more well-known, for other reasons, and I say, stick to the winning formula of quality parts, reasonable prices, and, if you place 2nd or 3rd, still, a hell of a car.
5. Mention this rationale to the eds and see if they can include it in the article, whatever way you decide to go. I think readers will appreciate your thought process and your ultimate decision much moreso.
This comes from someone with your full stage 4, as well as other mods, but not all Evo owners go for broke with these cars. Just my 2 cents, fellas

Dave,
I've used a bunch of your parts on my old Talon, I loved your parts and would love to see you win this event. Haven't done any modz to my MR yet, but I'm sure you'll be getting a bunch of my money soon.
I think the only way you can lose is by sending a car that breaks down, don't go so crazy that you lose reliability.
Having said that, go all out (without breaking down), if you win it will validate all of your parts. It would make King EVO.
If you think about it you just can't buy advertising like this. A win, or even a really good showing will yield more advertising than you could ever afford to buy.
Don't blow an intercooler hose. Good Luck

Still reading all the input. You guys are making me lean towards a more serious build.
Blowing intercooler hoses will NOT happen to us. Not saying something else won't happen but that chances of that one are slim.

I think goin all out is the best option. How sweet would it be for a lil 4 banger to beat out TT vipers, TT vettes, TT benzs and all kinds of other V8's, 10's, and 12's. I think you can build a helluva car for 100 grand and still be cheaper than any other car in the competition. Don't go for first in class, go for first overall. Vishnu has shown us that you can come really close, you guys can show us how its done.
Here's the big problem:
Now we know about this and now we have to sit and wait several months to see the results
edit: Dave, I think you should edit the first post and make it clear to all that this is the 4-banger tuner challenge. More than half the people are still thinking it's v. Lingenfelter, et al...

I tried to edit it, the topic in the post is all that changed.
Could one of you fine outstanding moderators do it for me? Change the topic to read Super Four Challenge instead of Super tuner?
If so thanks, if not......I'll send a hitman

Let this month's C&D be a lesson...
If you go all out, keep it reliable. Car & Driver panned Vishnu in this month's issue after their Vishnued long term test car had a number of problems. They were basically suggesting that it's not worth it to mod an Evo. Car is fast as is and modding just adds problems. The fact that the car picked up 80+ hp didn't sway them in the face of reliability issues. I'd say that the article hurt Vishu's reputation. By contrast, in the same issue they review a Lingenfelter C6 and praise the car's stock like drivability and refinement. Potential new customers are going to be swayed by Car & Driver's opinion, not just who wins. All of the teen subscribers will focus on who wins, but those with money to spend will focus on both performance and reliability. I'm sure after this month's article, Shiv will work hard to make sure that his car doesn't falter on the reliability front.
