Tapping after CAM install
Joe250,
nice write-up and video. I was watching the video, and my wife came in thinking I was watching **** on the computer..... lol, it's the audio on the clip, if you didn't know it had to do with cars, you'd think it was something else.

I'm incredibly surprised no one EVER brought up the VFAQ procedure for de-compressing the lifters
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/lifters.html
I did this ALONG time ago when i owned a 1G, and i didnt even have to take the cams out, haha.
I typically use a paperclip or MIG wire from the welder (its pretty stiff and you can bend it to how you want)

I did a cam install about 3 weeks ago on my evo and I bled all the lifters, cranked the motor several times and then started it up. When I started it up the tap was very loud and I let the car just idle for about 10 mins and then I took it for a cruise and slowly brought up the rpms. The tapping got significantly less but its still there. I came across this thread and I tried the reving up to 3k about 40 times and no real improvement. Should I just replace the lifters and if so who sells lifter, should I just get them directly from Mitsu. With the new lifters do you have to bleed them before installing or do they come prebled.
Erm... I know this is offtopic and also an old thread... But my evo with stock cams makes ticking /tapping noises.
I have a DP and there was a tapping when the DP was first installed but that sound came from lower in the engine bay. This ticking/tapping i'm talking about now is audible at the top of the engine bay and loud enough to hear it anywhere in front of the car with the hood closed. Could it be some sort of belt?

I have been searching most of the day on this topic and just can't find one definite way to resolve this problem. I properly bled all mine when I did the install and even did the 3k thing and still tap. In my readings I saw some tried using a oil additive and it seemed to work, anyone else have luck with that. There was also a write I found on how to clean the lifters without removing the valve cover http://www.dsm.org/archives/1996/04/...04.txt/18.html
I just had my HKS 280's installed. I did hear some light tapping at first during warm-up, but all the sounds went away....a few days later. Hopefully my luck will continue.
that seems to work on mine.
unplug the ignition system, or injectors or unhook the fuse, crank the car 3 to 4 times for about 10 to 15 seconds.
Then re-connect everything and ticks are usually gone by then.

call Buschur for the lifters. The dealer walk-in price in S. Florida is $48 per lifter. I have a friend at the parts counter and got them for $26.30 each. I think I saw them on Dave's site for under $15 each. Call to make sure they were not the old 4g63 lifters.
I have HKS 272's and have the tapping also. After doing the "reving to 3000 rpm 10 - 30 times" procedure, to build pressure I still have the tapping. I decided to remove the valve cover and physically check the lifters. My lifters were all filled with oil and solid. The rocker arms were all aligned and seated properly on the lifters and valve stems. The springs and retainers looked fine. No strange wear on the cam lobes or anything. Im at a loss, The cams were installed by a reputable mechanic, the lifters were bled down properly and everything looks fine in the head. The cams have been in the car for 2500 miles and there has been tapping ever since. I am also thinking about the jackson machine lifters. They would be well worth the $150 if they got rid of that annoying sound!
The dreaded Mitsu tap!

On that note, Im really sick of my random tapping I get with my lifters, I might get some 3G lifters soon, or at least before summer!
