I'm on the fence here. I was thinking of cams as a way to add horsepower ("open up the top end" as has been said by others) but now it occurs to me that may not mean much on pump gas. The only real fault of the stock turbo is that it starts to fall off toward redline. The WR seems to spool up just as well, but not fall off (as soon).

From a dollar to hp/torque perspective the WR looks like the next best step. Adding cams later (already have exhaust) will be to improve response and build torque quicker. Is that about right?
Tym was just stating that he was TESTING some prototype cams and they did not make any more power. Rest assured cams like HKS and GSC will add 20-30whp on pump gas. They do open up your top end and greatly increase power on pump and race gas!

WR results

Anyone with numbers yet with cams? I know I am impatient, but come on. Anyone at least installed one on a maxed out stock turboed car and noticed a considerable difference?

Is there really something else in the works from FP? Could this WR be clipped for even more top end????

Most people will have numbers the weekend of July 9th/10th.

Clipping the turbo would affect spool-up which is one of the biggest selling points of this turbo.

I'm not looking for huge power so this turbo seems to suit me just fine. Now I have to decide if the CE-28's go on the ol' choppin block to get it.
Not the wheels

This turbo should be the best choice for what your looking for, but it's still to early to tell if it's going to be as good as we hope.

Adding cams will give you a noticeable improvement ... then again so will adding a bigger turbo. The bottom line is that the stock cams tend to really fall off after 5000 rpms (I'm sure you've noticed ), whereas aftermarket cams will not fall off nearly as fast. Of course the stock turbo doesn't help, since it also runs out of steam in the upper rpms range. I would recommend extensively looking at dynographs (there are a lot to be seen that compare stock vs cammed Evos) before you make a decision.

Clipping may hinder response, but if it provides another 20 or so AWHP up top, we would easily be in the 425-440 AWHP and that is worth a slight response deficit to me. The 3071 is too much of a compromise according to a friend of mine who has tried one. I would like a turbo (hopefully this one) to make a HUGE difference over what I have, to be linear and not to lose too much bottom end.

Just curious, according to your friend, what was the compromise on the 3071? spool? driveability? ...and what kit? ATP?

Based upon the Switzer dyno graphs, it won't lose bottom end vs. the 9.8 turbos.

I just got done re-reading this entire thread and still have a few questions that were never asked.

-Does this turbo still retain water/oil cooling?
-What is the inlet size of the compressor housing?
-Will this be able to use the stock 02 housing, thus keeping stock/aftermarket downpipe in the stock location?
-When is the next batch due out?

I have the turbo on my car along with a little 2.3l

The turbo is linear... All the way to the redline, 8,000rpm

Don't know what kit it was, but the problem was with no low end and the turbo hitting like a rock and then not being linear enough for street driving. These were his comment. I asked him more questions as well.

I may call Robert at FP to see what he thinks on clipping or upcoming options for more power.

I had my Big16G on my DSM clipped. The spool-up loss was noticeable and the top end gain was missing. Screw clipping - Ill take the response!

I dont think its worth the trade-off - Im sure many will agree. When going to a large turbo, you lose the response but gain a definite amount of top-end which is more than worth while. The response loss from clipping was noticeable while the gain up top is negligent from my own standpoint in previous turbos, noticeably on DSMs.

I have no doubt that cams + WR would be great which is why what Tym said about testing of the prototype cams was so interesting. Unfortunately, I'm trying to stay within something resembling a budget -- LOL -- and I can't just buy both. I was planning on getting cams and upgrading the turbo later, but the results posted here made me reconsider exactly what effect the cams were going to have. I'm looking at this from a pump gas perspective, so "top end" performance will not be as great as it is with race gas.

In the end it comes down to what my money will get me in terms of performance. The pump gas tune shown in this thread is pretty remarkable, and then Tym says his initial testing with cams (of some sort) showed no hp improvement. So, I asked the question of Tym as to what he'd recommend.

The jury is still out, but I'm open to suggestion.

It would be interesting to see this turbo on a decently modded car with some high lift cams, maybe some Tomei's. Should make some decent torque...but who's gonna step up?
