Wow. That sucker got HOT. I do not know if the damage was from just detonation or not, normally the amount of detonation needed to melt the top of the piston like that would have cracked the stock cast piston way before it melted.

It looks like it did crack in at least one place. But, if the ECU isn't capable of backing off enough timing/boost, you may not know you're detonating that bad until it's far too late.

It's definitely detonation damage. Now it's just a matter of figuring out for sure what caused the detonation so it won't happen again.

The top of the piston is not melted. The ring land melted and broke off and deposited everywhere once it cooled down.
