i had chosen not to comment because i don't agree with the opinion. and that's really what it is... it's an opinion that running a car in such a way is "good," i really don't happen to agree. that's an abomination of tuning philosophy and sense. if you're not "willing" to get a COMPLETE tuning system... then 'you' shouldn't be tuning at all.

flashes that are custom taylored for your car are hard to beat. safc running injectors of the proper size to maximize timing advance is a great self teaching and self tuning toole/route. a marriage of half of one and the other yeilds less than optimal results.

it's true that some people don't have a "choice" when it comes to getting custom flashed. that's why dsm owners ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY have used safc with the right sized injectors for YEARS, including mr buschur himself back in the days. there are MANY safc "gurus" and many others that don't proclaim any expertise but are willing to help (you may even be one fo them). it is a very viable option for just about anyone with patience and a desire for optimal performance.

you say that but why did you buy the afc in the first place??? to fine tune your custom tune correct???
warralton so your saying if you got custom tuned on 91 & you wanted to run race gas for a track day with more boost a afc would not be beneficial that's silly...

Silverofs, when the hell did I say that? I'm the one saying an SAFC on top of a flash IS useful. Trinydex is saying it's NOT. I'm the one who took a base flash, then added race gas, boost, and fine-tuning with my SAFC to run 12.000 on stock cams. That's how I operated until I got alky and got a 24/7 race tune.

I think a base flash + SAFC for fine tuning is far, FAR superior than having to upgrade your injectors and then severely manipulate the ECU with an SAFC to get decent timing and still have none of the features from a flash. Trinydex disagrees.

whoa whoa whoa "when the hell did III say that?" i said safc on top of a flash is not a good way to tune... safc on top of a custom flash for your race gas maps IS good... as i cited for your personal setup mr talon.

and please enlighten me as to how safc on top of a base flash is better? what about when you ahve to take away some fuel in teh mid range becuase the mail in was too rich to be "safe" but the timing was mild too... so when you take away the fuel... it gets more aggressive... well.. how much more? i don't know... how "safe" was your base flash to begin with??? the more rich it was the more dangerous it gets as you take out fuel as timing increases... the more dangerous it was the more DANGEROUS it gets as you take out fuel... is my point getting across?

so what if it was VERY dangerous and you need to add fuel... well it takes away the timing that WAS there and i'll HAVE to assume that the timing was conservative cuz anyone mailing you an aggressive timing map needs to be put outta business (i'm sure al doesn't do this). then you're not running optimally........................ wow... great system you've devised. i'm sorry i'll stick with scot gray and his umpteenmillion eleventybillion majic boosties trix.

Its always the ones that don't know how the SAFC works with injectors and don't know how to tune the SAFC that are the doubters. Don't knock it till you try it I always say.

Zach, I bought the SAFC strictly for a race gas map, you know that.

I went from an Evo8 turbo setup and then added a ported 10.5 hotside, Megan 02 housing, and ported stock exhaust manifold. I didn't gain much peak power at all. I did gain 20-25ft/lb of torque in the midrange, as well as 10-15hp at the 6000rpm area though (ran 2 more degrees of timing there). The logs for both were done about 1 week apart, tuned to the edge of knock at every 500rpm increment, and then brought down til there was 0 knock.

So I guess I will be the candidate for testing the Evo9 turbo, fully isolated Is my car an anomoly since I didn't gain any peak power, and that the consensus on this thread agreed that I am supposed to expect 20-25hp from the 10.5 hotside and o2 housing alone?

Thoe99 did you happen to buy a 9 turbo? I am on my 8 10.5 hotside and was thinking of switching to the 9 on E-85. LMK!
