real intercooler test on the way

Hate to let the cat out of the bag before I have numbers but I am doing an intercooler test of my own to gain knowledge for myself. I have five coolers here so far with at least two more on the way. The testing will be done with two peak/hold boost gauges and two peak/hold fast acting temp probes. The tests will be onroad with only the coolers being changed. I will be using a g-tech for horsepower data. The car will be my evo1 with 2.3/20g setup. I will post more info at the start of the testing but just wanted to let everyone know I will be putting an end to this e-bay drama the correct way. My belief is no vender is going to give unbaised results so I want to do some testing to satisfy my own needs.

Update: please dont read 18 pages looking for the results. This post will be updated when results are in. sorry this testing is taking so long. I cant finish my cars if I dont finish this testing so its just as aggravating to me.

Update: there are some flow testing results on page 21 post 309.

to really do this experiment correctly, you need 3 exposed type J thermocouple, 2 MAP sensor and some sort of data acquisition, the faster, the better.

1st thermocouple outside the IC, right infront where it sees ambient air

inlet:
-2nd exposed type j thermocouple
-1st map sensor

outlet:
-3rd j thermocouple
-2nd map sensor

man, that's going to be a lot of work. Thanks for going to the trouble and for sharing your results.

Doesn't need to be a type J TC (type K is fine too). It would be good to have that third TC in front of the IC.

the voltage output of the J is higher than the K, good for measurements in the order of 10s of degree - greater sensitivity.

Yes, the J has a greater slope, but its not going to matter because the measurement range is going to be over 10s of deg F and both are accurate to within +/- 1 deg C. Standard quality TCs typically come with an error limit of +/- 1 deg C, and getting more accurate than that requires calibrating the TC against a known standard. I don't want to go any further off-topic, so this will be the last I say on this.

On the list:
AMS street
stock
PWR
Nesei
XS engineering
ebay AMS copy
ebay 24 x 12 x 4
slowboy
greddy supra 3 row

The only other core I would like to test is the buschur race core. But I feel it will be very close to the nesei. Local here has one I may be able to borrow.

There is an interesting thread comparing the weights of each. Weigh them if you get a chance

94AWDcoupe, now this is something that I'm excited to see the results of - nothing like some good unbiased, vendor-free testing...

^^^agree with above on weighing each 'cause you can. Also, would only take a minute, and would be good to see all the IC's weighed on the same scale, for testing's sake.

Thanks again for doing this for the good of the Evo community!

94AWDcoupe, you are the MAN! I cannot begin to thank you enough for your hard work. This is a great contribution to EvoM. Finally, some hard core data!!!!

God, if you were a really hot female it would be perfect. Thanks for this test, as it is awsome for people looking for intercoolers, and will be totally unbiased.

I would like to see the BR Race FMIC in your testing too. Then when it's all done we'll be the only company left selling intercoolers! That would be great.
