But when I close the gap (my plugs came at .045), the iridiun pad no longer sets over the electrode. It's off to the side.

Alright. I'm pretty sure you said that you had ordered IKH24's. Those come gapped at .032 and so do the IKH22 and 27's. Are you sure you got the right plugs. The IKH20s come gapped at .044 but that is a STI/ many other vehicles plug.

If anyone is in a pinch, you use Autolite Iridium xp5325.it's the correct length and cross references with ikh24.
I'm using them until my ikh24 get here. Gapped at .024. Stock engine, etc. Runs great, so far.

Ah. My bad. I shoulda clarified: I'm running the Autolite plug as it's the ONLY one in my whole town that x-references with ANY of the plugs listed above. I'll be swapping in the Densos as soon as they arrive.

I think the Autolites are hotter than stock. The stock Autolite heat range should be a 4 from what I've gathered ... not much info out there on it though. Cross reference the BPR7ES from the VIII as a comparison with Autolite heat ranges (the last digit is the heat range ... lower is colder).

I'm only getting about 8-10K miles before having to change my plugs. I do it about twice a year, or every other oil change.
