Did Mitsu screw up on the clutch
Thats definately not correct, the stock EVO clutch is made by Exedy. I called Exedy to get information in breaking in my Exedy HD twin, and then asked them if it were true that they made and supplied evo stock clutches and they confirmed it.
iv got 2000 on mine and its fine but i know my friend has 18000 on his ix with 4 track days 2 days on the strip lacr and 2 days on HTM at willow and his is still holding strong he drives the s*** out of his car to
I've got 17k on my IX MR and still just as good as day one. I'm considering a change since it slips a little on hard launches, but considering the torque going in I can't complain about it. I'm not the world's best clutch driver and I have raced the s**t out of the car too. I think most of the clutch failures are probably coming from over-revving from a stop or slipping the clutch in slow traffic to get better drivability out of the car. Just my opinion.
Mine slipped out of the Box, car had 40 miles on it when new, and always had a "lag" to it, some slip after pedal was out all the way. But as far as clutches go, if you mod and are making 80-100 more whp/wtq than stock, we can't expect miracles.
I'm putting down 320whp on Andy's dyno at Speed Element in Fremont, CA. I think a new Lamborghini hit 325whp a few weeks back. My point is that crank horsepower is damn close to 500 ponies. I'm on the stock clutch at 41k miles.
Plus my 70yr old father borrowed the car for all of last week when he was staying at my house. He would invariably rev the ba-jesus out of the thing before letting the clutch out. He told me it had been 15 years since he'd driven a stick. Ouch. I thought this would be it for the clutch. Nope. Still crisp and strong...knock on wood. In my experience consumable car parts last as long as you drive them to last. It's not hard to toast an AWD clutch before 10k miles but it's also not rocket science to make the thing past 40k miles. Just my 2 cents.
BTW...I'll most likely upgrade to a more robust clutch/flywheel combo when this one eventually goes out, but I'm confident another stocker would give me thousands of miles and years of trouble free driving.

I have an '04 RS, mods, 49K miles, and a stock clutch. I baby it, but I love WOT on twisty mountain roads. I have dumped the clutch at stop lights a handful of times and I'm really not into it. Don't like the feeling of abusing the car/drivetrain. The clutch has held up fine, no slipping, although it is a little clappy lately. It feels like their is minimal meat left at the pedal. I'm in the market for a new clutch. I'm thinking about stikiller's Exedy stage 2/ flywheel combo for about $850. Anyone have good luck on an aftermarket clutch. Please share
7800 on mine, clutch is ready to go out. More money i dont have to replace it.
**No suprise from what i have heard on these cars. I however, do agree with people on here saying that this clutch was designed to fail before any other more important parts are damaged, i.e. tranny/tcase, etc. That idea in itself from a production/assembly point of view makes sense for the company to do this. What does NOT make sense is to design this car with the amount of power STOCK and knowingly continue to mass produce a clutch that cannot handle the power. This is not a daily cruiser, honda civic or toyota corolla, it is designed for ONE thing, and that is performance. Although some percentage of evo owners have had the stock clutch for more than 20k miles, a huge percentage have had it give out way before, and that should raise an issue with Mitsubishi. Like i wrote in an earlier post, I have already wrote Mitsubishi Corporate, and the only response i recieved was some little pamphlet on complaints. It does not seem they are too concerned about this, and i agree some kind of suit should be filed. 30k car blown clutch 20k miles, thats unheard of and completely unacceptable from a consumers point of view.

22,000 miles on stock clutch...40+ launches at drag strip/ around town, I beat the crap out of this car and the clutch holds perfect...I guess I got lucky and got a good one
i have 46k on my 03 VIII it just started to slip last week it has made 310awhp for about 3 years now i did a hand full of nights at the drags and 2 full seasons of autox with full launches every run, it will still spin all 4 in the wet but it wont hold the TQ under load i can only imagine what kind of tard you have to be behind the wheel to only make it to 20k or less. to make sure i have plenty of clutch for the future im going with a competition clutch 6 puck sprung with a 10lb flywheel
