Did Mitsu screw up on the clutch
I'm slightly confuzed, what is the TC going to tell you about the clutch?
Either way, the second you drove off the lot and you found this you should of turned around..... in addition, stop and go constant traffic of course is harsh on your clutch (especially every 5 seconds if you have to ride the clutch to go), no offense, but having a degree in automotive anything does not give you talent (I'm sure you are perfectly good driver though), I would say the same even if you were a clutch engineer.
In addition, only because your clutch did not last, does not mean that the OEM application is inadequate, you have no idea what happened to that clutch before you purchased the car.
For example, part quality issue, or.... the specific tests done at the factory. In my experience almost every factory has a suspension spec adjustment and a chassis dyno test (this is not a power pull), brake test, engine test etc etc.... my point is you'll be surprised sometimes how hard those brand new 0miles vehicles may be driven....even after the cars are usually also tested on an external drive before they are stuck in a lot to be shipped........
This leads me to my final point, sometimes you get a bad clutch, you should discuss this with Mits Motors North America, NOT your stupid service manager because he knows dick, and hes probably a dick anyways (sounds like it).
Any serious warranty issue should be discussed directly with corp. MMNA.
My TC blew at 26k, (99% highway miles, 100% stock) I contacted my local mits service dept., they took my info and than noted to me that I did not have a power train warranty because I was not the first owner. I was pissed, but obviously (ignorantly) took their word for it because they should know better than I, they are the dealership service, and they have my info.....
Well turns out, I replaced the TC on my own dime, went back to the dealer (different) for some other warranty crap, and found out that I still have all warranties, regardless of how many ppl own the car, my info in the system is still valid, and there was never a claim submitted for a powertrain warranty...... which means the deuche never even checked, he just told me something that he thought he knew, and he was wrong.... getting even better because of the economy, that dealer does not exist anymore, so there is no way to prove my horrible experience and the bull **** I was told by a mits. dealer. So I am ****ed right in my *** by a retarded mistake by the dealer......I'm currently opening an investigation/complaint with MMNA.

I think your misunderstanding my point but i get yours..what ever could've, would,ve, should,ve happen with this clutch did'nt. regardless of prior misuse or abuse by employees before i took ownership. i did take it back and mentioned it to the dealer and he said the car needs a break period wich is about 500 to 1000 miles wich made sense. so during this time i did not go above 60 mph or 3,000 rpm so there was no indication of anything wrong aside from the feeling of a soft clutch and when i say soft clutch i mean not the kind youd expect from a high performance car.
For example why is it that my evo like others comes with aftermarket high performance brembo brakes and sticky yokohama tires and not regular run of the mill mitsubishi brakes and lower end tires. because those two brands are bonefide guaranteed for stopping and handling.. hands down..so why not put a high performance aftermarket clutch like ACT OR CLUTCHMASTER and call it a day, ill tell you why because like brembo and yokohama their guarentied and that would force mitsubishi to put its money where its mouth is for the five yr powertrain warrenty.
Last but not least my refrence to my education was in no way indicating talent, just an elaberation of my knowledge above the average layman so that the reader of this column could get a better understanding of my experiance,no offense taken.so as the saying goes "when you want somthing done right do your self" i will be installing a superior clutch
i got 70k out of my stocker with plenty of racing, launching, autocrossing, and a good every day flogging. the clutch isn't the problem in any of these cars. the driver is.

..good luck with that complaint

Do we know who supplies the stock clutch? I heard excedy supplied the 9 clutch, but I honestly don't know. I do know that excedy does do some OEM applications...But like you said, they want to protect the powertrain.....
I got 35K on my 9 clutch, no issues.
Dont know yet who supplies the evo x stock clutch but heard the samething about the excedy in the 9. my friend has the 9 and drove it and they feel complety different its alittle more more hard core then the 10..
As a brake designer, I see the common misconception of brake feeling vs performance often.....similar to a clutch, the pedal feeling is designed around the intent of the 'target customer'.......
It seems to me that the X is slightly softer all around than the 9.....
Here's a question, are we comparing clutch feeling or holding performance (slipping)???

deffinetly holding performance (slipping). your deffinetly right about target customer.every where i go with this car i get a reaction from people as though i were driving a lamborgini..but i think some performance was sacraficed for the sake of braking into that bmw, lexus, mercedes club.nothing that a few mods wont correct.
The drivetrain needs a weak leak in the system to remain reliable. Mitsubishi didn't make the car thinking we want this awd to run 100+% , if the clutch was made like an aftermarket clutch and held power like crazy that in an automakers mind = more broken parts.
By making the clutch weak to where it will slip under certain conditions including launching with stock power sometimes, burns clutch material rather than blowing transfer cases, and or snapping axles. etc.. Its the weak link so nothing expensive will get the wear and tear.

original clutch like new at 95K
I drive my Evo hard and I just passed 95K on my '03. My clutch feels like new. I never adjusted anything and make sure smoke is only seen a few times a year. Being a mechanical engineer I never fell for the "adjust your clutch threads" for better feel or earlier/later engagement. Like the guys that designed the car and tested it don't know anything? I expect to go 140K plus. Who has the highest original clutch miles?
