do exhaust mods NEED a tune?

i'm reading up on all the Evo's wants and needs as far as tuning goes.

and i know when you mess with the airflow(filter, intake, etc) you need a tune to run without hesitation and bs. but what about the k&n drop in? need a retune for that too?

and when it comes to the exhaust, does it affect the car the same way negatively? or can you just mod-away and have a grand ol' time?

the reason i ask is because i have a test pipe that i'd like to install on my mostly stock evo, and i dont want it to hinder performance or drivability anywhere through the rpm range.

yes i know about the double stacked defouler routine for the secondary o2.

thanks.

you dont need a tune for a drop in filter. Same for the exhaust, BUT to get significant benefits from the TBE mod you need to get a tune to see the 30+HP and Torque.

yep that would be a good start:
3" turbo back exhaust
K&N drop in filter
Manual boost controller
Tune

From what I have been reading the second o2 sensor does not affect performance. Its just an emmissions control warning device.

Stock evo ix's are supposed to trap 1/4 mile around 104 mph. I never raced it at the track when it was stock but with cone filter and turbo back exhaust I was trapping 106.X mph. Dont know if it makes a difference but I was not running a non-fouler trick and had a CEL light for the test pipe during those runs.

Just upgrading parts will give some power but you need to tune the car to maximize optimum performance.

After exhaust and filter, get a boost controller then a tune for maximum performance results.

We'll if you do the mods and plan to beat on it..I would get the tune....If your just going to do normal driving and have to put off the tune for whatever reason you'll be fine. I did the intake and the TBE (with test pipe) and didn't do the tune for a few months. I just didn't beat on it till I got the tune.

I'd say if thats going to be ur only mods go for a tune but if your going to add more mods then wait till you get maybe full bolt ons like boost controller intercooler + pipes and cams and save ur money just having it tuned once

i have the mbc and it is set at like 18 psi. it works great. i'm gonna put the test pipe with defouler on now. i had it on for a few hours with no fouler and it picked up hp/tqu like crazy, but i got a cel right away.

ill try with the fouler today and see if the cel stays off. thanks.

dont need it for the filter just drop in and go exhaust wont negatively affect you but you do want to tune for it. if you have a cel fix for your test pipe youre good

Second (rear) O2 is just there to make sure the cat is working. Obviously if you remove the cat, it is going to be like "WTF" and throw a code. It is just for emissions, and should not affect performance. You just couldn't get it inspected with the CEL. Simple fix is just an anti-fouler you can get at any car parts store which moves the sensor out of the flow of the exhaust, and so only sees 'clean' air.

As far as a tune is concerned, you definitely do not need one just for a drop in filter, nor for just a test pipe. While you are there, I would definitely consider at least replacing the downpipe as well. As mentioned, Evo's come very rich, and so even tuning when stock is a step up. Read up on ECUFlash, and learn how to do it yourself. No need for a professional tune with just a couple of exhaust components...
