I've cut off bearings when I replaced the wheel bearings in my gvr4, I'm used to such work.

Can you put a parts overhaul list together for me because my tranny has 193k on it, I have to completely let the rpms come down to get it in 5th !
It grinds every gear if I quick shift, I don't mind rebuilding it myself !

Bump from the dead. I'm trying to make a decision between two options. Quick background:

My 6spd had a a weird thing where it was hard-ish to slide between 3rd and 4th gears. It went away on it's own. Cable problem? It then started with a slight grind when shifting into 4th at high RPM. I get to the track... then it starts grinding 3rd AND 4th. Then the stiffness between 3 and 4 again.

So... do I pull the 6spd and fix that problem?

or...

I have access to an VIII 5spd that grinds 4 to 5 at high RPM. $500 for this trans, plus finding all the crap to swap it in.

My concern is lack of parts for the 6spd. I now that certain parts need to be purchased as sets and can be really expensive. Support for the 5 is far, far better.

I don't have money to send either out to have done right now, so will attempt to fix myself (since I actually have all the right tools to measure clearances). I read through this thread and have all the info I need (including FSM).

So... which makes more sense to fix? Keeping in mind i LOVE my 6 and, if i swap to a 5, the shift lever sits back enough that it may be a problem with my seating position (I'm short LOL).

I've pretty much decided to wait on finding a decent 5spd (next to impossible), but a basic rebuild seems really, really doable as long as i measure and remeasure clearances.

I can drive the car now, with the 6spd.. so could take my time and have fun building the 5.

It depends if you can get the individual parts you need for the 6 speed. Once a synchro is grinding, it starts wearing the engagement teeth on the gear too. So then the gear, the slider, and the synchro needs replaced. You can almost never get away with only replacing the synchro.

I've been doing some research with Jack's. Turns out, with the 6spd, You pretty much have to buy a large group of parts to get what you need, I.E. buying the output/intermediate shaft to get the bearings. I can see it getting very expensive.

If I'm replacing stuff in a trans, I may as well do it on a 5spd. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going back to the 5.

I took a lot of notes from this thread, have the FSM, and acquired a really nice caliper to measure up to .000. Gonna roll with that. I'm sourcing part numbers and a place to order from, so if you have any ideas... Right now John @ Jack's seems to be where I'll be going, since he's the only one that replied to my messages. Cool dude, that John.

I'd recommend that you refresh the 5 speed, gather parts and swap it in, then tear open the 6 speed and see what it needs.

Not doing the 6spd. Gonna be way too expensive. Trashing it.
now, if I could afford the Albins gear set from Jacks....that would be a different story LOL

I maybe could have negotiated a few bucks for the thing but instead my little contribution to the community.

Since you don't daily drive the car Kaj, get an Evo 8 5 speed to rebuild, and put the JDM 5th gear in it. You'll have the longer 3 and 4 ratios, and the JDM 5th is nice and short. So you don't have the huge RPM drop on the 4-5 shift. Only down side is freeway rpm will be like 3800 at 70mph.

Try hitting up TRE. He was having email issues a while back, so he setup a new system, and a contact form. So he says he has been better at getting back to people. Jon has also always had better prices on parts than Jacks.

John pretty much sold me on the JDM 5th gear. The downside is if... IF I ever end up having to or from the track... I'll go def. LOL.
Looks like I'm doing the JDM 5th, synchros, and a hub/slider. Well, and anything else I find in there that needs being redone.
The trans is sitting in my garage, waiting for me to take it apart to check it out. I wish I had a better idea of what I'm looking for, though. Other than odd wear and obvious damage, that is.
As for TRE, I think i got an email saying to send in the trans for a quote, which isn't what I had asked for or am looking to do. I'll send one more email, requesting the info and pricing, but will stick with Jack's if I don't hear back.

That's what the other posts here would lead me to believe
