Packing the exhaust in a box now and ready to ship out in couple hours, when on my way to school.

This is what I was thinking about doing in the distant future.

Dual tip is sort of growing on me.

Or for single tip style:

But I will be changing that stupid motor with a wastegate actuator that works with pressure. So its going to work similar to how the Corvette C6 ZO6 has the butterfly inside their muffler. Except mine is boost activated. I was thinking maybe having it open around 12 or 14 psi just so I can accelerate quietly on highways or just when I need a little more power at part throttle.

I just had my catco 3 inch HFC cut out today and the Magnaflow 14419 muffler put in its place and to be honest I don't think the car is any louder, it may be a very tiny bit but I can hardly notice it...I am very happy I did this and now I can run race gas and not worry about fu*king up the cat...

Did it appear that you had plenty of space. I ended up ordering the 6 in case I hope it'll work...

Yeah space shouldn't be a problem...I only went with the 4 inch case but a 6 should have fit...even with the y pipe off my cutout downpipe...that was what I was worried about space wise but you shouldn't have a problem...

A 4" is pretty much same as running a cat. So is it safe to assume that the 6" will be quieter than running a cat?.......

Thanks for the update btw.

In looking a bit, I didn't see where Varex had any US-based distributors.

What are your thoughts as to the rest of the piping? Seems like you could buy a used exhaust from the trader and have a shop weld up the Varex muffler in place of the original muffler. It'll be interesting to see if the Varex alone is good enough to quiet the system without adding a second muffler or resonator.

Well I will only use Buschur exhaust to modify lol. Two reasons why, he has a pretty good design for exhaust flow and his slip fit is very easy for me to modify. When its slip fit your calculations can be off a bit and it wont matter because you can twist or slip in/out more to adjust fitment as you like.

I used the varex as an example but I'm not sure if I will use them unless they offer one with boost activated actuator or one with no motor. Any dual IN muffler should work.

I've been going through the exact same routine as you BluEVOIX and pretty much have your setup duplicated with a few notable exceptions.

AMS 3" downpipe, 5" round Magnaflow muffler in place of the cat. An oval Vibrant resonator about 12 inches behind this followed finally by a 7" round magnaflow muffler at the rear. With this setup the car is definitely quieter than it was with the straight AMS TBE however to be honest it's still too damn loud.

The biggest difference is that I also have an FP Red with 4R cams so I am wondering at this point if the turbo is the reason why the car seems much louder than it should be. I've ordered up a sound level meter so I'll try and get an official measurement in the next few days. I don't want to deal with flow disruptions and landing on different speed density maps with an electric cutout (I also have a QTP downpipe and cutout laying in my garage that I tried once before).

Perhaps a 6" muffler will help a little more, anyone have one I could borrow for testing? I'll pay for shipping to/from.

I think a 6 inch will help. I figured this: 5in round = 5*5*14= 350 sq inches of dampening. 6 in muffler is 6*6*14 = 504 sq inches. This is not exact since it's not a box but close. Now resonated ams test pipe is 4.5*6.75*10= 303 sq inches. So basically a 5 in muffler is close to the ams resonated test pipe in dampening which doesn't quiet the exhaust much. Just my thoughts I'd say try the 6 but I should have mine installed next week and can comment better. Ams tbe with 6 in magnaflow in place of test pipe but with STD 6.25 * 14 vibrant can

Wkhen did you have problems with figment after you had the muffler installed? My ams is touchy I had to ignore ams writing on the test pipe and flip it backwards and 120 to get it to clear. Worded that when they chop up my test pipe the flanges won't line up the same

I welded a 3 bolt flange to my 5" magnaflow where it connects to the downpipe. The back of that magnaflow has a v-band that I welded to it so that the long straight section of pipe which follows after that and includes the oval resonator could be rotated so it fits nicely in the driveshaft tunnel. I didn't remove any of the cat heat shields for the 5" muffler and it fits pretty nicely.

Mr White I am very interested in hearing back once you have it installed.

I measured the sound level this evening using my Radio Shack Meter set on slow response A weighting and the car is 96-99 db at lumpy idle, 102-105 db at 1500 rpm fast idle right upon start-up. It was late so I didn't get a reading at 3000 rpm but I'm already disgusted.

Damn, I took my car to a shop today and they did not think the 6in would fit. With the exhaust torquing it would onlybe a matter of time for the driveshaft to rub. The guys recommended using a 4in magnaflow but based on your readings it's still going to be loud as he'll

A lot has to do with the type of muffler used and how well its made to silence. Some muffler companies hardly put any packing inside or use different types of material. If you have a muffler thats stainless steel wool, that wont do much in sound deadening.

My car had zero rubbing issues. It will only rub the driveshaft if your exhaust is not well secured by the rubber exhaust hangers. I used my stock hangers and my exhaust was held very tightly in place and didnt budge. Also there was a lot of clearance from the drive shaft. If anything, I would say the bolt that held the driveshaft to the underbody was close to the rear section of the pipe, around the rear doors area. But that is no where near the muffler.

But this is all regarding stock fitment like downpipes. AMS uses their owns style downpipe that is not compatipable with anything other their own products. So I'm not sure how their fitment works. With my setup, any 2 bolt downpipe that can fit the stock catalytic converter will work.
