starter problem

i just recently did a rebuild on my transmission in the past week so it required removing the starter..so i removed it no problem, didnt drop it or bang it or anything. so today i put it all together and as i go to start it it makes a strange starting sound..not like grinding but more like when you have a low battery. but it finally started and made a loud screech when it did. i know what its supposto sound like but now its sounds different in a bad way..is the starter going bad?

I had my tranny rebuilt also and after I got the car back, it would die. The car would start if I jumped it or sometimes by itself. Turned out that there was a bad ground connection on the tranny. I don't remember if there was a strange sound but hopefully this helps.

Make sure nothing fell in the starter area. I had a nut fall in there once, i was driving down the road and the starter kept intermittently engaging.

I'd suggest pulling the starter, checking the overrunning clutch for proper operation and making sure the slug in the solenoid is moving as it should (in other words, the gear gets pulled out of the flywheel when you release the key).

Ihad a similar problem. When I started my car it would make a grinding noise and would start up. Over last winter it finally died on me. Took starter to get tested and came back that it was good. Took it to three autoparts store to test it all came back as it was fine. I was thinking that the shaft in the starter when it engages to flywheel would not spin flywheel. When they test the starter it just spins freely and they check voltage. I'd put all my marbles on starter going. Good luck.

it almost sounds like the same cranking the engine does when you do a compression test but once started car runs perfect

Im having the same problem right now. Did yiu ever fix this??? My starter shorted oit because a socket fell on it, but i bought an Autozone starter and it was screeching when i started it. Now i replaced that with a new mitsubishi oem starter and its still screeching after starting.

Starter plate?? Did you mean the flywheel ring gear where the starter gear engages to?
