having read most low viscosity engine oil reports of EVO, I am still in doubt how it be done so properly indeed. It is incredible. I am now runing a 2006 EVO 9 RS clocked 14,800 miles only. I bought it brand new from a Mitsubishi dealer. During the first 1,500 miles run in period, I used 10w30 Exxon Superflo (now Mobil Special) mininal oil and the rpm very rare over 3,000. As the turbo was not runing at such low rpm, the car ran normally and nothing wrong with it. After running in, I switched to Mobil 1 5w30. Sadly, over 3000 rpm when the turbo started turning, it ran very badly that the turbo bar built up very slowly, ie. it was not able to show its reserved power at all. I am quite sure the oil firm was too thin that it was not tough enough to support the shaft bearing floating. So I changed to Valvoline 15w40 Turbo premium mininal oil specially made for turbo engine. The change was so dramatic that all its power came out at once. Its acceleration was stunning that 0-62 mph was less than 4.3s and to 100 mph less than 11.5s. I put the car on the rolling road to check its power ouput. The factory quoted 280 bhp but in fact it came out 312 bhp with no particular modification except the Blitz panel filter and Okada Projects waste spark two-coil pack. The temperature in Hong Kong in summer is around 28-35 C and in winter is around 12-20 C. The car's performance does not make any difference regarding temperature. I regularly change the oil every 1,000 miles or per 2 months. Recently, I try to switch the ignition to Spark Tech with M & W Pro 12 module. The result is not up to my expectation since I do not know how to switch to high power output mode. So please enlighten me how the persons utilize low viscosity oil in summer. The temperature in USA in winter normally is very cold in the north but in summer it is very similar to that in Hong Kong. Besides, any person who has experience with M & W Ignition. Please help me. Thanks a lot and be much appreciated.

Hopefully this thread can show you the proof that oil changes every 1000 miles or 2 months isnt necessary. With a good oil you can extend that a bit and save yourself some money.

what do you thing the low viscosity engine oil ie. 5 w30 is able to handle the exteme high summer for EVO engine. I have made a reserch in the workshop and then have a real test on the public street. The low visicosity oil is not properly able to handle the extreme high tempature of hign pressure turbo. It thin firm break within a couple of minutes and metal to metal contact occured. Low bar running hot hatches properly can do so. Any comment to my experience?

Not all 5w30 oils are created equal. For one, if you notice the specs from members posting their UOAs youll see that some of these 5w30 oils are actually on the thicker end of a 30 weight--almost closer to a 40 weight. Some of these that area advertised are actually on the thinner end of a 30 weight. For instance, Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 is much thinner than Redline 5w30. I know for me, the Ultra was just a tad too thin, it was very similar to the Eneos 10w30.

I don't want to start making comments on here about which oil I do or don't want to use, but Mobil Special, and just Mobil 1 in general, are not really on the top of my lists.

If you use a good quality oil, and your on the stock block, then either a good 5w30 or 10w30 should work just fine. I would just look into a better oil.

Interesting how the lab said aluminum and copper on the high sside, I am not sure 7 is anything worth of mentioning specially given that this car is raced.. but they had to mention it for awareness ok I can live with that.
how about the iron which is on the high side ?
Also to say that 0w30 is on the low side duh it is the lowest 30 weight engine oil one can purchase.

I know you won't run past 5 on the oil... but did the lab look at the TBN this oil had left ? Wow did they mean 12k miles or 2k.

2k on that oil. To and from the track twice and two race events.

Here is what the filter looked like:

I'm about to send in another sample. It has 500 miles on it and my race event from last weekend.

Man, you guys are changing your oil often. I'm running ~3500 miles on a change with 2-3 track days in there.

CBRD suggests 2-3 track days, which is what I normally do.

I wanted to test some oil after one track day.

Are you sure you don't want to edit your personal info on that UOA?

2-3 track days should be fine on any good oil. I personally wouldn't do more than that, especially if you are also driving to and from the track.

Ive got another sample getting sent here pretty soon too.
