Yes, it should be the shorter, fatter one. I sent Golgo evo 8 filters but the application shows that if you order for evo x you get the shorter one which is the better one. Their application for the evo x filters also fits evos 8-9 btw. The shorter ones are wider and should have more surface area making them better.
IMO yes it would be worth it. A few extra bucks for better filtration and synthetic media. But the Purolator is also a good filter.
Just a little feedback about the AMSOIL filter. Since switching from the fatty Wix to the slim new model AMSOIL, I am seeing on average a 1-2 psi oil pressure increase at idle. No other changes whatsoever.
FYI, Fram Ultra(XG9688, short fat one) is also synthetic media with wire backing. It's $9 at walmart. Wix now has a synthetic media filter, it's the Wix XP line. Napa uses the Wix XP for their Platinum line. I don't know part numbers for the XP or Platinum lines, but the platinum is on sale for $7.54.
Hey golgo13 - would you be willing to do another filter test if someone sent you additional filters?
I picked the Baldwin filters a while ago because of a similar test run a long time ago by a Mopar guy. Couldn't find everything (as I don't remember the exact URL) and have to hit WayBackMachine to get the few links I did still have.

A lot of the info here follows what you have also discovered. He gave his opinions why some were horrible and others were good or great.
One thing that I haven't found yet to explain - is that there are manufactures that will give different part numbers on their oil filters for the different years of Evo's.
That is to say - one number for the 2003/04 year, different one for 2005 year, and another different one for 2006 year.
I'm not sure I've found why this is? Are there different requirements for the 4G63 on these years that isn't totally public? Or did I just miss a thread about it that explained the difference in needing a different oil filter between these years?
To me they all have the proper requirements to fit all models - so just pick the one that is the largest in filter size (unless you are REALLY low to the ground - then that may not be a great choice)
Thanks a ton for doing the hard work!! Great read brother!

Lancer and the 4G6X.
Filter manufacturers are probably just getting confused.

Personally, I would just try to find a filter that is as close to OEM spec (See the DENSO filter in this test) and go with that. The size of the filter will change oil pressure characteristics, but not by a huge margin. Not enough to be a problem as far as I can tell*. As I mentioned above, the more media surface area will allow the filter to capture more contaminants, allowing for a longer OCI.
*I'm not responsible for what happens to your car if you do not run an OEM spec filter.
No worries, glad it is somewhat useful!
