The OFFICIAL Oil Filter Testing and Results Thread (4G63T/4B11T)
That 540RAT blog about oil is pretty darned interesting.
Since he seems quite gung-ho about not using higher viscosity oils (higher than 30) I want to add this note I found on the order page for Oil Extreme products. This is from where they list their 20W50 oil:
I don't think 540rat mentioned anything about this, how your bearing clearances affect the viscosity you choose.
I ran into the above while I was trying to figure out if there was any significance to the multiple weird spellings I found for their magic calcium ingredient. Could not find any significance to it. Good for a laugh though:
calcium petroleum sulfontate
calcium petrolium sulfonate
calcium petroleum sulfonate

20W-50 Oil Extreme "Better Than Synthetic" Motor Oil.
Used in some race applications where larger engine clearances are experienced.
Follow your engine builder's recommendation regarding correct viscosity.

i think this might be a good complement to this thread:

No idea who this guy is, but he has consistently been testing oils for a while it seems. I currently run Amsoil ZROD 10w30, which ranks a disappointing 32nd on this list, so I may switch to Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 or just SSO 0w30. It might benefit me to stay with ZROD though, given it's (claimed) designed for cars that tend to sit for a while, which my evo definitely does.

A few issue I see with this guy,,, I am wondering if he had to do some sort of project for his graduate engineering class or is he trying to pin another patent

One; remember that all bearing and journals in an engine are torqued to a spec to allow for proper clearances. This to allow for a controlled space for oil flow. With the numbers being shown in 540RAT report, the main and rod bearing would have to be torqued to unreasonable numbers. The engine would not even turnover, let alone run. 2. Look deep into the article and you will see a disclaimer "My test equipment is not intended to duplacate an engine internal componants... so.. what's the pourpose all the (results? are meaningless) I also see a lot of support for "oil extreme concentrate" Wonder what involvment he has in that company. One more thing, Just a lot of gobbley gook to make it sound to good to be true. If this is not a one armed bandit , it's so close it not even funny.

Dear golgo13,
I wonder about source of filters's specifications above, for example:
1) FLOW RATE: M1-110 ( 3 gpm), D3323 (9-11 gpm), Ea15k20 (9-11 gpm), RP (9-11 gpm)
2) Micron rating: D3323 (30um)
Where did you get this information from?

This is the test he may have designed his around, or at the least using some of the methodologies... Pay close attention to the shampoo part,, this test is so unscientific that even shampoo does a better job during the test. When testing oils you don't test metal to metal contact because that is not occurring inside an engine. There a clearance sometimes of .003 - .005 thousands between metal parts

Thank you for taking the time out to do this thread. I knew purolator was a good filter. I used it when I first bought my 9 and I got lectured by other evo drivers to stick with oem or K&N. I'm definitely gonna go back to purolator or amsoil/rp
FYI here is a quick cut-up of the PSL14459 (the full synthetic Purolator):

...and the info page from Purolator themselves:
http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/...ilFilters.aspx
Comparison to PL14459 shows they are the same on paper:

....and I'm not sure how reliable this site is, but it claims they are the same on paper as well (including media displacement):

It sounds a bit gimicky, and I can't tell if the filtration ability is actually improved over the standard PureOne (which I use exclusively). Since I'm running higher weight oil, I've been more curious about finding a PureOne that has a higher bypass pressure so that more oil goes through the filter.

pretty pricey, don't know much about it. In the video it seemed like the filter was smaller than the short wide ones we run though.
