Evo 9 GSR & TTR Built 2.3L Oil Consumption
This happened on the last two builds, and the only difference is this time it only happened to 3 of the 4 cylinders. Only difference I saw in the teardown measurements it that the good cylinder had less cylinder tapper, The other 3 had a strange taper that opened up towards the top of the bore, which is what lead me to think there was some strange wear from the rings.
The only cylinder without ring land damage was less than 0.5 thou, the other 3 were 0.8-1.1 thou tapper. Again, hardly anything outrageous, but over the specs we would expect for an engine at work. Still not a worthy explanation for the consumption.
Ok, well according to Mike at Wiseco, they actually recommend >15 thou. And again not the problem with either of these builds.
Only thing we have come up with is the Asymmetric skirts combined with a notched bore not providing good enough alignment. So the talk is focused on maybe a 87 1400 HD with some adjustments and a custom ring pack so hopefully can get this thing squared away soon.

Have you checked that the oil support rail that is used on these pistons was fitted the right way? If it wasn't it could make the exact same damage as it did.

You should take it apart and rebuild it. Odds are the block itself is still good and you just need to reset PTW and ring gaps.... as long as the oil clearances were set properly.
