Exhaust manifold stud replacements

Hey guys. The other day I noticed a lag in boost build up. Turns out I had an exhaust leak coming from the manifold. When I tried to address the stud that sourced the leak I attempted to tighten the nut. When I did the stud started to back out of the head. My question is, is it possible for me to back out the old stud (if it comes out in one piece) and replace it by threading the new one in? Or do I need to helicoil the hole first?

you tightened it and it "started to back out?

as in it is completely stripped, and just pulling out?

If the stud is pulling out of the head while you're tightening the nut, it's going to need a thread insert (helicoil, timesert, whatever you wanna use).

The stud is right hand thread, so if it is spinning it was either loose in the head and it is tightening, or the threads have pulled out of the head and it's just spinning.
