MR vs EVO: Is the MR edition worth it?

What bling. Evo's have no bling. Whether the MR is worth it or not depends on the individual. If you are planning to change suspension, and rims...then it's not worth it. If you want a more comfortable daily driver, and can afford the extra cash then it is.

I found the MR to be very nice and quite the bargain for my taste. Just consider what you get for the extra $4K
1. Aluminum roof
2. 6 speed tranny
3. Bilstein shocks and matched springs
4. BBS light weight wheels
5. Vortex generator
6. Factory gauge pack
7. Aluminum pedals
8. Carbon fiber hand brake handle
9. HID lights
10. 100,000 warranty
11. Free scheduled maintenance for 50K miles
And I'm probably forgetting something else.... There is no way in hell you can add even half of those mods to a regular EVO for $4K.... Even if you could, you still don't have an MR..... Sure, if you want "Bling" you can spend thousands more than that in some other aftermarket wheels and tires and some coil-over suspension and you are still way off the mark.... Sure, you can spend $3K to $4K in engine mods and get a faster straight line car, but so what. I can spend about $1K and have the same or nearly the same straight line performance and you still don't have an MR...... Sure, maybe you don't want one, maybe you can't afford one or maybe your mommy or your wife won't let you have one....Hell, maybe you just hate the MR on principle. That's OK, but you are still wrong about the value for the $$$. The MR is a bargain if you want a car like that.
I own an 04 RS and now an 05 MR. Wonder how many of the posts on this topic are of those who actually own an MR? My opinion, its worth it over a GSR. Have owned more than 10 DSM's. Have a little experience with Mitsu products. And the MR is the best the US has seen from Japan as of yet.
Count me in for the MR! It's funny when many talk about modding their regular EVO's and then compare it to the MR stock.
True Comparison: Stock for Stock MR wins.
- mod any version EVO --- MR wins (6 speed becomes even better with engine mods)
- suspension upgrades already on MR provide better base to add to.
- MR MR MR all the way.....OH, and the real WIN....."Resale Value"
For me: A true Driver...not drag racer, but track enthusiast who takes cars to their limits and drives to win.....MR!!!!! RS is track all the way, but not enought EVO STREET PRIDE for me.
Thanks MITSU for the MR!!!!! Just keep it on top for awhile.

They are all evos at the end of the day...PERIOD! Anyone who owns one is a car fanatic in my mind. I had an 03 evo and hell yeah it is just as cool as my MR. I would drive any evo from any year with the same pride.
When I get the name of the magazine, I'll let you know where this info came from! Went to the inlaws house and he gets most car magazines. Car and Driver, motor trend, etc....
They did a comparison of eack type of Evo offered in the US. to see lap times, 1/4 mile, etc....
Basically, the MR runs about one car length infront of the "GSR" over the entire track length. The RS comes in 3rd, just about an 1/8th of a car length behind the "GSR". IMO the MR is not worth the extra cash.

Ok, let's look at some rough estimates to bring a plain Evo 8 up to par (I'm pulling these numbers from vague memory, so feel free to correct me):
HID ... Included
warranty ... included
RRE JIC setup ... ~$2500
ECU reflash ... ~$400
Vortex Generator ... ~$300 (better yet sub a rear undertray for $500)
Gauges ... $800
So that's pretty close to $4000 and now you have a plain ole Evo 8 that has better top speed, and will definitely outhandle and outaccelerate a stock MR and you will have spent the exact same $$$ and will have some real, usable gauges (not hidden away behind the shifter). Again, this is just the way I look at it, for some people the "mystique" of the MR probably counts more than hard numbers and everyone has to make that call themselves. I just don't see where the MR is the better value. The only situation where I could see getting an MR is if you know you're not going to mod the car.

As for the engine performance, MRs are known to produce upwards of 280 whp in a DD dyno with full exhaust, XEDE and cam gears. My '03 GSR with everything but the kitchen sink made 290~300 whp on a DD dyno....
As for your other arguments, you could also say that you can buy a 1.8 Miata for around $5K~$6K, spend $3K in the best suspension and tires you can get, upgrade the engine with a FM turbo for around $4K and even add roll bar, wheels and race tires for another $2.5K and you'll have a car that will outrun and out handle your moded EVO for about half the money....... Is the EVO worth it?
I think the MR is definately worth it. The low production numbers (only one year in the Evo 8), and all the other additions including A/C which the RS does not have. I will take the A/C and the extra car length on the track. The car absolutely eats up the road with a full warranty too! Something you lose when modifying a stock Evo which you would need to do to keep up with the MR.
