relocate oil line

hey guys i just installed my new turbo and i was wondering if i should relocate my oil line from the banjo bolt on the front block near the head to the turbo. My oil line now is coming from the rear of the block to the turbo now. the reason why i ask is cause i keep blowing my turbos and i dont know why. i wanna get your opinion on what i should do. thanx

you say you keep "blowing your turbos" what is happening? What does the turbo shop say that you send your old turbos to?

Do you have a turbo timer? is your oil line becoming coked? How is your drain routed?

One of the biggest problems I would find on turbo systems I would repair was that the oil return line had a J bend in it, or did not flow well back into the pan.

Are the seals blowing or is it getting a lot of play/locking up?

So you have a water cooled turbo with out water lines going to it? Thats not good if that is the case.

you dont have to run water lines to the turbo. it depends on the setup.

What motor oil are you running? If I were running at sustained high engine speeds on the Autobahn in the summer I'd go with Castrol 10W-60 or Motul "Lemans" 10W-60 and an extra large oil cooler.

No, you don't HAVE to run water lines to the turbo.
You don't HAVE to wear a seatbelt
You don't HAVE to wipe your butt after you use the toilet
You don't HAVE to keep your head out of a pre-heated oven

In other words..... Even though you don't HAVE to do some things... it's a good idea.

I didn't say choked, I said coked

but are there any bends? How long is this hose? What size is it?

Now, you didn't answer us. HOW are you "blowing your turbo" are you blowing your seals? are bearings going out? are thrust bearings going out?

Here's the long and short of it. If you are damaging multiple turbos after 500 miles, it's not the turbos fault, it's the setup/use

Water lines are not mandatory but a good thing to have when it comes to the length of the life of the turbo when being pushed hard for long periods of time. The housing arround the shaft seals and bearings is thinner due to the water jacket so they tend to just heat up faster under normal cruising on american highways but at high rpm for long stretches it would be much better to have the water lines hooked up. I have one customer with a Dart 2.2 vtec honda that went through 3 liquid cooled gt series turbos in less then 600 miles on each one due to the nature of his driving on the highway at 120 plus for about 4-5 mile stretches and with a honda thats cruising the rpm's are about 7k over 125mph, and it was allways the exhaust seals that failed and everytime it got warranteed I was told it was due to heat and garret told me I had to hook up the water lines .
