I had a few things leading me to the decision.
- I had a gates pump leak from the shaft after 1yr usage, and replaced with another gates that started leaking after a month so was worried of head lift. I had no other signs of gasket issues though and I’m using head studs. If I kept driving without replacing the pump it would make a coolant mess.
- My 5th gear synchro was just starting to show signs of wear at high rpm shifts from 4 to 5.
- I have 30k on my current clutch, but that could have lasted longer.
- I did a wet compression test (1-4). 169, 142, 160, 169.
- Leak down pointed to head issues. Was hearing some air between cylinders, so I didn’t spend any more time diagnosing further. At minimum head has to be fixed, milled and new gasket.
I already had a new OEM water pump ready and other parts for the future upgrades so just decided to go “all-in”. I am the original owner and plan on keeping it forever so I try to keep it in super good shape. Winter in Arkansas is a good time to be without my car also.
I can see what you mean about it being more than 1 thing. It is nice when its all done and good at once rather than rebuilding parts of it here and there.
I hope if all goes well for you man, keep us updated!
Did the work a little while ago, but not sure I ever posted it… lowered on Bilstein B16 2-way adjustable coilovers, rolled and repainted rear fenders, Graham Light 57DR 18x9.5 wheels w/ Continental Extreme Contact all season tires, JDM tail lights.
Changed the transmission fluid. Looked like the previous owner never changed it in 5+ years. There was only one quart of thick slop left and soo many metal shavings. The gears don’t grind when I shift anymore.
