I wanna know how people think that some governement agency can take your import car. If you want to import a car and drive it around on private property there's nothing illegal about that. Hell, I do big burnouts in my driveway because its my property and burnouts aren't illegal on private property. Why can't I import an Evo and park it in my living room if I want to?

If someone wants to import a car don't you think they might want to know if it will be impounded regardless of whether it is driven on the street or not?
I guess in your small mind you don't worry about whether a $40k car will get impounded by the government. You just worry about whether you can drive it on the street. Read the thread, shorty.
And if you read closely you can figure out that I was questioning the theory of ownership by suggesting that I would park an Evo in my living room. I guess you need me to spell it out for you. The question is: Can someone legally own a JDM Lancer Evo in the US without the car getting "Collected"?

Okay, so enlighten me. Most insurance companies are petty about modifications and the book value of the vehicle is still the most important factor. And how in the world would a 240SX be an okay assumption for say an R34 Skyline that I just paid, say 90 grand for from Motorex. I know you don't get all your money back in case of theft or loss, you get book value minus depreciation, unless you've got gap insurance. You'll pay for it, of course. But most insurance companies are happy to do it.
You can do it with a policy rider declaring the additional value, for example... or with a specific "declared value policy".... or several other ways.
Its done all the time.
No info on the legality of the rest, i.e. registring the car as a "Lancer" and etc. But the insurance isn't the problem... it's the DOT / NHTSA / etc.

actually, I believe that even cars used for racing and off road driving can be collected also, after a specific time.. I think its under a year that they can be here.. read another guys post that is linked to on this thread where customs knocked on his door to repo his lotus excige.
There are lots of things that're illegal in the US, both to import, to buy domestically, or to simply own, or be in possesion of... weapons, drugs, cuban cigars, human organs, etc. Why is it so hard for you to beleive that??
Dude, this WHOLE THREAD is over the fact that most people dont want to import a 40k car only to have it reposessed and sold or crushed into a little cube... If it's not street legal, and you cant prove that it's being raced, it will be taken, it's happened before. and I think that anybody paying 40k for a car has paid for the right to be concerned whether or not he can drive it to the corner liquor store and back.

However, I do not think it is the same thing to claim the car is actually a V6 coupe, and then claim that the 5.4L DOHC motor, the IRS, and all the other widgets are "performance mods." Like as if it were a bunch of stuff I bought at SECO (oops, I guess Pepboys for you guys) and put on in my driveway in a weekend. That's not right. I'm not saying that it can't be done (well, maybe I am to some extent), but the amount you'd be paying, versus your possible return would more then likely be a worse net then somebody's policy on a USDM EVO8, which is a risk, that I personally would not be able to take. The factors they use for depreciation on aftermarket goods are probably worse then they use for the car itself. So you'd be looking at 50% loss (or more) on the stuff that is supposedly "aftermarket" like the engine, the drivetrain, the chassis, the ACD, the AYC, you know, the little things + average to clean book for a Lancer ES. So my comment was more or less to say, wow, I envy you guys for being able to have so much disposable income, but if it isn't such a big deal, I'd like to know about it.

If you use EI or other automotive importers to get a car, and register it for street use, it's a different story. If the govt gets wind of the importing and registering for street use, and if hte cars are not approved for road use, and IF what EI is doing is illegal, the govt can seize your car, shut down EI operations, and strip them of their importing license.
Go to some other boards if you are curious about importing cars and their legality. I've known of people who have had their illegally imported Mini's (ie, a mini that is less than 25 years old) seized by the Govt...

Wow what a big price drop....before it was $30G's...then $35G's...then $40G's....and now $37G's...
hmmm...I hope they go down to $32 or at least $33G's
I dont think it's worth it to buy an evo for almost 40G's....you could just get a legal US evo for about 30G's already, and spend the $10G's left on some jdm parts to make it like the J-spec evos
