E46M > Evo
I was debating the same thing as you. I just turned 30 and was planning on a 9MR vs X vs E46M3 and after much debate i decided on a 996TT. Honestly you can't beat it. Its pretty much the M3 (luxury, status, etc) added with the Evo performance.

You can snag these things for mid 30's now a days. The motors/trannys are ROCK solid.

I currently drive a 06' 6spd M3 with about 34k miles on it. I love the car and I have wanted this car since 2001, its absolutely gorgeous! After owning 2 06' Evos (IX SE & IX MR), yes 2 Evo's, I was finally in a position to buy my dream car, the M3. Well, since owning this car, I have realized that it just doesn’t do it for me like I thought it would, or for that matter, like the Evo's did. The M3 is fast, and the Evo IX was just stupid quick, but more importantly than all that, the Evo's felt as though they were made specifically for me, I just cant seem to get that comfortable driving feeling, position, sensation that I had with the Evo’s. They feel button down and connected to my brain and the road in ways the M3 leave me wanting.

So at this point, I am seriously considering an Evo IX (if I can find a good one) and selling the M3. Now being in my mid 30's and single, everyone has said the M3 is me, why did you even ever buy the Evo??? They just don’t understand, but I would hate to have to go back and constantly justify my purchase, but at the same time, living my life for others and not self isn’t satisfying...

Pic of my current car, M3.
I find the evo the most sensational car to drive. The only other car I would get would be a Toyota Supra. I can't go from turbo charged to not. BMW's are not near as mod friendly, cost more in maintenance, and IMO don't look as good. If you like the evo more than screw what everyone else says. Don't lead your life in the feet of others. You can always prove them wrong . Go with what you want.

didnt read through the whole thing nor do I feel like it, but here is my outake.

My sister owned 05 M3 for about 3 months. She got rid of it and bought a CLK350 conv and now a 650i conv.

I drove the M3.
I drive my evo.

Power, You can clearly notice a difference. IMO, the Evo is alot better with intake + exhaust then was my sisters M3 w/eisenmann exhaust.
Driveability, the evo although a stick and not smg just seems smoother.
Handles better, oh yeah.

The M3 takes looks, and RAW performance for an NA engine, but everything else.. the evo takes.

Also you're posting on an evo board most people are going to say get the Evo. However, the Evo is not a very good all around car as far as amenities and things of the sort go. I would hate to road trip an evo cross country or even from maryland to jersey. I'd much rather a Mercedes, BMW, or other luxury variant.

as my sig says, I had an 05 E46 almost identical to yours and I felt the same way when I owned it. I never felt connected to it and after I sold it I had 2 more cars and finally the EVO IX which I am very happy with.

I think you already made up your mind. Good luck finding an unmolested IX. They are becoming a rarity especially as the IX was only made in 06 here in the states.

Hope this helps and do what makes you happy.
