Is the MR 6-speed really so fragile?
Is the MR 6-speed really so fragile?
Hey! Hi live in Quebec, Canada... Evo 8-9's never got sold here. But for a year now they are legal for import. Since then, the object of my desire is an Evo IX MR 2006. I had to wait for the lease of the Subaru to be over before making my move. The wait is over now!
I tried to find some in Quebec but there is about 15. Off the 15, 5 are on sale... All salvaged titles which I'm not interested in. So I planned to buy and import directly from the states and began my search...
In the meanwhile every used car dealer who had Evos in Quebec discouraged me on buying the MR model. They all say the same which troubles me a lot... The 6 speed tranny is so fragile it breaks into pieces just looking at it.
I told myself there is a lot of bad drivers in this world... Including Evo owners. I know for sure that if you hold the throttle at 6k RPM and dump the clutch... It won't hold for long.
But I don't drag race... That's just not what I'm interested in. It is going to be my daily driver and I do go on the track about every week for lapping and time attack.
I know the cost of a new tranny from Bushur Racing and you might wan't to add a transfer case to that and it suddenly becomes a very expensive car. I still want a 6 speed, better wheel and suspension, aluminum body panels... But I'm not looking for trouble. I mean I can't. From here it will be very hard to get the parts and get the job done properly. Lot of good speed shop aroud here but no Evo specialist.
So all I'm asking is some feedback from MR owners and things I should look for when buying the car if going for MR. I'm looking for a car around 40K miles...
Thanx for your support

Depends mainly on power levels. I was loving my 6 speed back when I had the MR. I tracked it no issue, but was only pushing about 330whp/320wtq. Start pushing the torque, and you'll have problems in the future according to what I've observed after years on reading on this forum. Could you also get lucky and have a solid tranny? Yes, hece my positive experience with my car.
The MR would stay stock for a year or so. When upgrading I'll take into consideration a tranny from Bushur or at least put some money on the side just in case. But for the first year I'll have no money after buying the car...
Solid tranny? What do you mean exactly?
Thanx!

tracking the car is what will kill the tranny
the 4/5/6 gearsets are thin and heat is the killer
drag and dd'ing them isn't an issue until higher torque levels are attained
you need to search as this has been covered many times.
