Grinding AFTER start.

I've got a IV and after starting there is light, grind-like sound. It is not loud and it is not long. Immediately after it turns over it will last for maybe 1 sec. I know it could be the flywheel not disengaging from starter, can anyone think of anything else?

I do always start it with clutch depressed, but I tested it and it seems to occur when it is not in too.

I would say its the starter. The starter motor uses flyweights to move the gears onto the flywheel during the "cranking"... if the weights are sticking a bit, or the motor is just generally old, it may need to be lubed up a bit.

I'd suggest getting it off of the car, inspecting it, and lubing, or replacing it as necessary.

I also first thought the starter too but after more tests, the sound is near definitively coming from the turbo area. I know the turbines get loose and such but its still pushing 21lbs of boost. Any ideas?

take ur intake off and check for rubbing on the compressor cover. u can also push on the center of the compressor blades to c how much movement there is.

the starter is right under the turbo. if you post up a vid we can proly tell for sure if it is the starter.

Right... but a starter is "more likely" a source of grinding associated with a start than a turbine.

Either way, pull ur intake off and LOOK at the turbo to see if it looks like its grinding. Check the fins, see if theres a ton of play, if you don't see anything, then move onto yanking the starter off and seeing what the teeth on the bendix look like.

or when you turn on the car just hold your key to the starter position a little longer than normal, and see if the grinding is still making that sound. if that makes sense.

Sorry for late reply. We have a typhoon here. Here is audio of 3 starts. The noise is most prevalent on the 2nd start but is present on all 3. The morse code sounding stuff is not part of this.
