I've seen private sale EVO's going for 23-25k. I figure this time next year I should be able to score a used EVO for closer to 19k-21k. That's right in the price range of what I want to pay for it. I could afford a new one but then I'd want to modify it right away.

The Evo didn't work out for me, though, because I drive safe day-to-day (save some fast freeway on/offramp stints, a handful of seconds apiece), and the one place I wanted to do truly "spirited" driving (SCCA RallyCross), its performance was underwhelming. Thus, I was not able really get good use out of this awesome performing car, and it wasn't worth the huge cost to me. The local SCCA Rallycross track layouts are very technical, and with no ACD (and thus no ability to use the handbrake for maneuvering), the Evo couldn't take the tight turns well at all. Granted, acceleration was outstanding between corners, and wider turns I could take with extreme speed and confidence (enough to miss record time one day by just 1/100th to an Open class rally car). However, I was able to pull times nearly competitive to the Evo when I tried the course with my g/f's '03 Lancer ES auto, thanks to the ability to use the handbrake!
The Ralliart's OTD price was about $7k less than what I owed on the Evo, with lower insurance, better gas mileage, far more comfort thanks to the UK Evo GT-A seats, and the ability to use cheap gas safely. Adding back $4k I'll get the RRM turbo kit when it comes out and have a car that's faster than the Evo on the drag strip, more comfortable on the commute, grocery runs and weekend trips, and significantly more agile in competition. For me, it's a win, win, win situation.
If I could do it all over again, though, I probably wouldn't change a thing. It was quite a treat having owned such an awesome car for awhile. I'm looking forward to being that fast again soon
Oh, and by the way, for you Evo guys out there who have never driven a Ralliart, it's not as awful as you might think. The tires are a definite step down, but the car handles amazingly well. It has to be driven differently, of course, but it's very smooth and transitions well. The Evo looks much wider & all with its thick fender flares, but the truth is, the Ralliart's track is only 1" narrower with stock tires. It's also about 400lbs lighter and sits lower.

Paid 21K for mine with 8000 miles. The used car dealership thought it was a regular lancer with some autozone parts on it. Can you say I raped them. LOL. There were no new ones left to be had in my area, but my buddy bought his new for 27K moon roof, and CF wing. I don't have the moon-roof, no biggie.
Your numbers are crazy. How can retail on a used EVO be equal to the cost on a new EVO?
Well my freind, in Austin, Texas the numbers may be different. In the Midwest thats what the books say.
Check my stickied posts on wholesale and actual auction prices for numerous Evo's..
Anyone selling them for close to those numbers are either desperate or not knowledgable of the market.
I got Eva on August 1st 04 35000 O.T.D., considering the fact I traded a 2003 acura cl-s 6 speed with 11,000 miles on it.(super clean) I Got sun and sound package, and lost $3000 on the cls(upsidedown). The good news is I love my evo and still got her $1000 under dealer invoice. If your looking for a good deal on a new evo hit me up.

EVO's are great cars unfortuneately for new car buyers their resale value on all Mitsu's suck.
Which is why I'm waiting until next year to find a EVO with under 30k miles for 23k or less. I have a friend who works @ an auction and lets me know when EVO's pass thru there...might even go a little lower then that.
Man next year can't come quick enough.
I wanted to buy new but I've bought 2 cars brand new and was sick after I saw the value drop....plus I don't want another high *** car note. The money I have saved is going into mods so I'm not putting any large downpayment up.
I just want the frickin cars.
Can't wait.

in the long run, I think the evo will hold it value. just like the rarity of the eclipse gsx in good condition still goes for top dollar.
